  • are you just back flushing with clean water through a heater hose? or do you have some magic elixer you use to clean stuff out?

    • I was just back flushing through the top radiator hose. Plenty of brown came out of the block, but waaaaay more came out of the radiator. I thought about adding something, but have not. I don't know what works. Time to google!

Oh yeah... I guess it really is a Mudstain after all.

      • benz diesel guys use citric acid powder, I've always thought CLR would work pretty good, or a mild solution of muriatic acid... but not sure what that would do to any aluminum you have in the system

                • Girdles are on!

Trailer ball is on, seat harness is in, top radiator hose is replaced to eliminate the rad cap thingy, it's full of water and water wetter, and the base timing has been put back where it is supposed to be. Let it idle in the driveway for a long time and it never got over 180 deg. Shifter still needs some adjustment.

I also fixed my shift light. It would stay on all the time regardless of the knob setting. I took it apart and after fiddling with it for a while, I noticed one pin on one of the IC chips was dry. Never soldered. Busted out the solder station and BINGO it works now.

                  Whoo hoo!

Although, 'SBG' does roll off the tongue quite easily. Nice upgrade.

                      • Tonight is the night!!!! Unless those late afternoon thunderstorms pop up. I want to go make some runs, but will happily defer if it means we get rain here. lol

Gonna load it on the trailer for the first time and drag it out to Amarillo Dragway and make some passes on the drag radials. This will be the test to see *IF* I can get it on the trailer and *IF* the Durango is up to the task of towing it! It should be fine since it is within the Durango's rated towing capacity. Fingers crossed!

At least if the car blows up, catches fire, or just generally pisses me off, I can load it up and haul it home. haha

                          • Here's to a succesfull first outing to the strip - and if it breaks - let's hope it's minor and easily repaired.

Got your jet kit and log book? Gonna read plugs after every run?

Pump gas? Got a full tank or are you going to run with 5 gallon cans and keep a quarter tank in the car?

                            Tire pressure?

TAKE VIDEO if you can! ; )

                            • Huh, this whole drag racing thing must be complicated. Jet kit and a log book? Amount of gas... I got lots to learn. I'm looking forward to getting you guys advice for my maiden voyage.

I like the trailering in approach. When things break, you still have a way to get home. There's a big sign at Thunderhill Raceway advertising that they will tow you back to the SF bay area for $600. Talk about adding insult to injury.
                              I'm still learning

                              • Bob - you're way ahead of the curve with all the stuff you've done!
                                - only reason for a jet kit and a log book is to stay organized and figure out an initial tune - since he hasn't run this combination before.

You can always tell the guys that have run the same combo for years and have it all sorted out - they're the ones that come back to the pits between rounds, hook up the battery charger, put a splash of fuel in, then sit back and relax until the next round is announced!

Then there's the guys thrashing and stressed out, changing carbs or parts of carbs, distributor weights and springs, checking plugs, trying to figure out why it's not launching right or falling on it's face, playing with suspension adjustments, tire pressures, covered with sweat and fuel and grease.... ah - the good ol days!

The log book is a very useful tool to keep your thoughts oraginzed.
Date, temp, humidity, track conditions noted - then what combinations you tried and what the results were.
60ft time, launch rpm, rev limiter setting, base timing, jets in the carb, tire pressure, etc.
                                helps prevent chasing your tail.
