I'm just gonna replace it and go on my merry way.
that's not necessarily true. if the ground hits more then 20 amps instantly it will blow, but like the frog in boiling water, if the fuse gets progressively greater loads; it won't blow but will catch fire.

    • I would get one of those stereo large size double fuses and run a lower fuse size.

      • Since the car is flirting with running in the 10's and the cutoff for a stock harmonic balancer is 11.00, I ordered an SFI approved one from Speedway Motors this morning.

I sure don't want to go to Drag Week only to be limited to 11.00 if the tech guy looks down and sees a factory balancer hanging off the crank.

            • hm, I have an aftermarket balancer, but a stock replacement flexplate.... is your flexplate SFI? at what point do you need a trans "shield" or blanket?

              • I replaced the fuse holder with a new one and all has been well. The old one was the kind w/o any sort of a cover and I think maybe it was just caused by corrosion. The new one and the other fuse holders all have the top that keeps water out.

My flexplate is SFI approved, but not needed until 9.99. Trans shield.... ****whistles and looks at sky*****

                • Trans shield or blanket rule:

                  2:14 TRANSMISSION, Automatic/NHRA-Accepted
All cars running 10.99 (*6.99) seconds and quicker must have an NHRA-accepted locking-type dipstick on the transmission.
Any non-OEM automatic floor-mounted automatic transmission shifter must be equipped with a spring-loaded positive reverse lockout device to prevent the shifter from accidentally being put into reverse gear. Functional neutral safety switch mandatory. All transmission lines must be metallic or high-pressure-type hose. All vehicles running quicker than 10.99 seconds (*6.99) or faster than 135 mph (except some Stock and Super Stock classes as noted under Class Requirements) and using an automatic transmission must be equipped with a transmission shield meeting SFI Spec 4.1 and labeled accordingly. (“Blanket”-type shield, appropriately labeled as meeting SFI Spec 4.1, permitted.) All non-blanket-type shields must incorporate two (or one, per manufacturer’s instructions) 3/4 x 1/8-inch straps that bolt to the shield on each side and pass under the transmission pan, or transmission pan must be labeled as meeting SFI Spec 4.1. Permitted in all classes where an automatic transmission is used.
Comp, Super Comp, Super Gas, 9.99 or quicker E.T. cars, and 135- mph or faster E.T. cars using an automatic transmission, Lenco Drive, or BRT must be equipped with a flexplate meeting SFI Spec 29.1 and covered by a flexplate shield meeting SFI Spec 30.1. Transmission that can utilize a high-gear transbrake must be supported by the use of two momentary buttons (one to arm the system, second as the main transbrake). Air shifter bottles must be stamped with DOT-1800 pound rating (minimum) and be securely mounted (i.e., no tie wraps or hose clamps).

                  Wheel/stud rule

                  5:2 WHEELS
                  Hubcaps must be
                  removed for
                  inspectors, who will
                  check for loose
                  lugs, cracked
                  wheels, worn or
                  oversize lug holes,
                  and condition of
                  spindles, axle nuts,
                  cotter pins, etc.
                  Snap-on hubcaps
                  are prohibited on
                  any class car. The
use of “spinner” style wheels or any wheel design that incorporates movable pieces while vehicle is in motion or stationary are prohibited. Each car in competition must be equipped with automotive-type wheels with a minimum 12 inches of diameter unless Class Requirements stipulate otherwise. Motorcycle wheels or lightweight automotive wire wheels must be equipped with .100- inch minimum diameter steel spokes, properly cross-laced to provide maximum strength. All spoke holes in rim and hub must be laced. Omissions to lighten wheels prohibited. The thread engagement on all wheel studs to the lug nut, or lug bolts to wheel hubs, must be equivalent to or greater than the diameter of the stud/bolt. Length of the stud/bolt does not determine permissibility. (Example: A 7/16-inch stud must be thoroughly engaged through the threads in the hex portion of the lug a minimum of 7/16-inch.)

                  Balancer/Damper

All classes, with the exception of Stock and E.T. cars slower than 10.99 seconds, harmonic balancer meeting SFI Spec 18.1 or solid metallic hub mandatory.

                  • Blanket tech

On the subject of trans blankets. I have the basic RCI product. I found that if you full wrap the trans the temps go to the moon, so I fold back the extra flaps onto the sides of the trans with the straps going around the pan as per normal installation.

I've never been called for this even when the tech inpsector looked for the blanket, but I am not guaranteeing this is acceptable.

I also learned the hard way that the blankets are great absorbers of tranny fluid. Leaks or spills get sucked in and will then drip out later as the blanket gets hotter. The typical cause is fluid pushed out of the trans breather.

Something else to look for so you don't get pushed back out of lanes.

They don't send oout print books anymore, they are downloads with your NHRA number and PIN. I can't and wouldn't forward the book but I'm comfortable posting the relevant section to questions so at least that part of the puzzle is clear.

I haven't been able to scan diagrams yet, like the one that illustrates the stud length rule.

                              • I use the "PRINT SCREEN" button to copy images from PDFs on the screen, then paste the image of the screen into a photo editor and crop it.

Every few years I pick up a printed rule book at a dragstrip. I don't have NHRA membership.
