Maybe its just the Engineer in me but I really don't understand how they get off calling an overdrive an underdrive
I haven't checked since I haven't seriously considered a GV unit, but I assumed it didn't have a 1:1 straight through ratio. I can easily be wrong and would agree with you on the mis-labeling of 'underdrive' if its a 1:1 ratio and the 1:.80(?) ratio.
      Escaped on a technicality.

      • GV cost too much for this po' boy. I have not even ever seriously considered one.

Anyone want to buy a 950hp? haha

          • Couple of more pics. It's an old style 1050, but I don't mind. Next step will be pulling the intake and opening the carb pad up to accept the larger carb and change the carb stud pattern.

              • I think you'll want a spacer with new carb and a lot of folks run a full four hole gasket to keep the linkage parts where they are supposed to be.

or Warlock mufflers - they have the cut outs built in - and have a great sound. I ran them on my '90 and loved them. totally streetable, and 5 minutes to open pipes.

http://www.allfordmustangs.com/forum...-shootout.html is what a lot of people quote:

Results based on 5.0 Mustang Magazine December 2002 issue (page 55). Test car is a 1990 Coupe with 370 HP and 11 second potential. A number of 66 pulls were made to compile this information. Where does your muffler stack up?

                    The results in HP order:

                    1.Flowtech Warlock (open) 374.2 hp/ 333.1 tq
                    2.Bassani Real Street 373.7 hp/ 333.8 tq
                    3.Hooker Maxflow 373.5 hp/ 333 tq
                    4.Borla XS 373.3 hp/ 332.6 tq

                    6.MAC 372.3 hp / 331.5 tq
                    7.Flowtech Afterburner 372.3 hp/ 330.1 tq
                    8.Hooker Aerochamber 372.1 hp/ 330.4 tq
                    9.Bassani 372 hp/ 333.5 tq
                    10.Spintech 371.6 hp/ 332.2 tq
                    11.Edelbrock Performer RPM 370.9 hp / 331.3 tq
                    12.Borla XR1 370 hp/ 334 tq
                    13.Flowtech Terminator 369.5 hp / 331.3 tq
                    14.Dynomax Ultra Flo 369.4 / 333.2 tq
                    15.Flowmaster 369.4 hp / 331.8 tq
                    16.Flowtech Warlock 366.3 hp / 325.3 tq
                    17.No muffs 365.2 hp / 330.1 tq

Interesting to me was the comparison to NO mufflers... I've read similar stuff with open headers v. header mufflers like the Dynomax race cannon bullet whatever and pickedup HP and TQ from what I'm guessing was added collector length.

Ball and socket collectors make it easy to drop them, and I was thinking about the 20-30 pounds of pipe and muffler as much as anything, but I also hear terrible things about ball and socket joints impact on flow. I bought what I keep calling Aerochambers but went and looked and they are max flows based on this test. Of course, by the time I install any of this junk it will be antique. I would like to see if ball and socket is really a problem at the 400 hp level, having just got the BBK long tube 1 3/4 and h-pipe in ball and socket for Monica's car.

so other than weight, according to that test (well short of your HP though!!) you don't gain anything. This is the first year I don't recall a head coming off that engine, I'd sure be tempted to leave it alone.

I'll be curious to see what airbags and adjustable shocks do.

If I was bent on a 10.99 at altitude, I might put the 390's back in it, drop the exhaust for weight, bolt some plexiglass in where the t-tops are, lose the passenger seat, and run it out of gas on the big end. I bet it will do it. Taking the passenger seat out, btw, is not cheating.

                          lol

I am currently trying to come up with an ingenious way to open the carb pad up to the Dominator size. Thinking 'hole saw' at the moment....

                            • IIRC there was Car Craft story on muffler comparisons some years ago that found a 25 HP loss with ball and socket connectors vs. a standard three bolt flange set-up on another SBF test case.

I asked the question as the way the over all exhuast system is built will have the largest influence on best perfomance capped up vs. opened up vs. the post collector exhuast being removed.

                              • Just updating this thread. The 'new' carb is actually quite old, but is in terrific condition. It is a 3 circuit and I really wanted a 2 curcuit. 3 circuit carbs can be a bear to tune particularly at part throttle, so I really do not want to attempt it. The conversion is fairly straight forward and I am already gathering parts/tools to do the conversion.

Carb thread where I will be documenting the conversion: http://www.bangshift.com/forum/showt...1050-List-6464
