Old heads vs. new heads. Same gasket.
Old.
New.

So you going to gasket match the new ones?

So.... lots of very serious racer type guys think rings are pretty important, and file fits seem to be the way to go, along with low tension.
File fitting rings is about as mind numbing as sanding or porting by hand, but one of those necessary evils.... using a piston to put the ring into each cylinder the same depth each time is handy.... measure 3 times - cut once. :-)There's always something new to learn.

DO NOT gasket match the intake ports on the heads and manifold. The gasket represents a generic shape, not your highly developed CNC profiled heads. During pre-assembly play with intake manifold gasket thickness to get best intake manifold to head alignment starting with the port floor of the manifold at or above the port floor of the head.
On rings there is power in the newer Napier cut second rings and a lot of guys have good results withthe total seal top ring. I use a more conventional but thin first ring set with lateral gas ports.Drag Week 2006 & 2012 - Winner Street Race Big Block Naturally Aspirated - R/U 2007 Broke DW '05 and Drag Weekend '15 Coincidence?

I ain't touching them! I would just mess them up!
I believe I read these are machined to fit the TFS intake manifold (mafia intake) runners exactly, so I will not be messing with them at all.Life is short. Be a do'er and not a shoulda done'er.

Oh come now, where would we get our "cusstomer service" entertainment if not for BBR calling the center and asking why his darn heads don't work?Doing it all wrong since 1966

I don't think so for this regular guy engine. I have to work using a regular guy budget, so some things have to be "good enough for who it's for."Last edited by BBR; March 13, 2015, 06:32 AM.Life is short. Be a do'er and not a shoulda done'er.

So yeah, the piston ring debacle continues...... They came in and.... I ordered the wrong part number!!!! CRAAAAAAAP!! Somehow I goofed and ordered rings for a 4.375 bore and not a 4.420!!!! Back they go!
At least the pistons are not here yet..... haha.Life is short. Be a do'er and not a shoulda done'er.

Interesting read regarding ring end gaps. Thanks for posting. No citations though in the article, so some questions remain.Drag Week 2006 & 2012 - Winner Street Race Big Block Naturally Aspirated - R/U 2007 Broke DW '05 and Drag Weekend '15 Coincidence?
