I am a total novice on the MS side of things - but my first thought when you described the problem was you're loosing your alternator - and the electronics are more sensitive to that voltage variation than if you were running a distributor.... Thinking outloud if you can get a hold of a known good alternator (or go back to a stock type 3 wire with internal regulator) you'd have less noise?

The first thing he should do is ground the MS to the battery and verify none of the other inputs are grounding out if they have wires attached to the connector. If he still has noise, the next step would be to unplug the electrical stuff one at a time and see if the noise goes away. Aka, pull the fan relay and see, then pull the water pump relay and see, and lastly remove the alternator belt and see. If there is no change in the noise seen, then its down to either in the MS case or the fuel pump motor, but any noise out of the fuel pump being mounted in the rear is "usually" pretty dampened.Escaped on a technicality.

It's strange to me that it suddenly gets worse when nothing was turned on or off. It's as if something is building up. Matt wants me to do a tooth log, so maybe I can do that this evening.Life is short. Be a do'er and not a shoulda done'er.

I'm not sure about the MS but most of the little electronic junk I've been playing with is remarkably insensitive to exact voltage. It's fine within a range. Almost smells like a cold solder joint to me or maybe a capacitor or some other component going bad, ie, getting warm and changing values. Back when we ran points in almost everything, that is what would happen a lot of times. Once the capacitor (condenser) was hot, no start. When it cooled back down, it would run again.
Do you have a sim you can let it "burn in" on? Maybe it will do the same thing on the bench after a few minutes...Last edited by Beagle; August 8, 2016, 06:57 PM.Flying south, with a flock of bird dogs.

With the hall sensor moved in tighter and the stock tach disconnected, it fired up and ran like a top. Idle, sustained rpm, made no difference. Trigger log looks perfect. Have not looked at the data log yet, but I ran it for about 10 minutes with no issues. Don't know if it was the sensor adjustment or the tach disconnect so I am going to reconnect the tach tomorrow and see if it was the root cause. It would not be a surprise if it was. These stock instrument clusters can be bizarre at times. Example: sometimes when I turn on my lights, the cluster is all wonky, random warning lights on, tach reading weird. Hit the top of the dash with my hand and everything works properly once again. Works every time. HahaLife is short. Be a do'er and not a shoulda done'er.

The dash lights thing is just a bad ground connection, most likely.

Yep, that was all. Took Jake for a ride yesterday to drop him off to meet some friends and it ended up being about 10 miles longer than I anticipated. A little further than I really wanted to go at this time, but it ran like a top. Seems to be running on the rich side, so it looks like I need to do some tweaking. Hammered on the throttle a few times and it really feels spunky.
Had to make a stop at the gas station because I wasn't 100% sure how much fuel I had.

I connected the MAP sensor on Sunday. Everything looks good. It's nice to be able to datalog that too.
I also figured out why it was running to rich. 2 of the 4 high speed air bleeds were clogged with goo. I cleaned them out and it was back to normal.Life is short. Be a do'er and not a shoulda done'er.
