Yeah, these have no threads but they fit the bolts very snugly. Very nicely made parts.
We put 2 spacers in and it seems to be just right.
We're knocking stuff out a little at a time. Radiator hoses connected, fan connected, fuel system finished and checked for leaks, and we started putting the exhaust system together. It seems to fit ok. We chopped the mufflers off the truck because Jake wanted to use them on the Mustang. We just need to locate them under the car and weld up some pipe to connect them.
Then it's just little stuff like heater hoses, oil, filter, prime oil system, stab distributor, hook up wires and see if it will light off!
Can't wait!!!

Not much work time this weekend. I had too much yard work that needed to be done. But, I did take a couple of hours to mount and weld up the mufflers. So we now have an exhaust system!
I was also going to make a new brake line to connect up the master cylinder, but did not have the correct fitting in my box. Boo.Life is short. Be a do'er and not a shoulda done'er.

Chambered mufflers! On a foxbody! I bet we're the first to ever do that! Haha Bad pic, but they tuck up nice and barely hand lower than the subframe connectors. The fuel line looks close in the pic, but there is actually plenty of room.
This thing *could* possibly make noise this weekend......

Sooooo close!
Jake and I worked Sunday afternoon to finish up all the little things we needed to do before attempting to start this thing. Add oil, water, prime oil system, tighten up exhaust, fabricate a brake line, bleed master cylinder and a few other little things. This left us little time to try to start it. We did give it a whirl with no luck. We had a stuck float we had to deal with, and pulled the plugs to make sure it didn't puke more fuel than we though. It was quite a bit easier than with the previous engine. Haha
We have no spark so far. We are using the HEI module ignition that used to be in the yellow truck. The module lived outside in the elements for a few years so it may be junk or the Mustang's battery may be too weak for it to operate properly. I have a growing list of thing to check. Probably something simple.
One unexpected problem is that the guy the put the 2 head studs in (me) neglected to put any sort of sealer on them. As a result, both appear to be weeping around the nuts. I have read several threads about this stuff and some have had great success using GM radiator tabs so that is an option. The first thing I may try however is to just remove the nuts, and squirt sealer in the head hole around the stud and all over the stud. It's definitely worthy a shot over pulling the head!

We have spark!! The no-spark condition was caused by a poor ground. We feex!
I pulled the distributor, hooked up a bunch of test leads for grounds, poked a spark plug in the end of the coil wire, turned it on and spun the distributor. Viola, we have a fat blue spark. Fixed the ground, and put it all back together.
No time to try to start tonight, but I'm sure it will kick right off when we do.
Now, why didn't I test all this *before* I go to this point?? Haha.

With the engine setback 1" and the radiator moved forward, the 302 looks like a V6! I can almost stand in the engine bay! Haha.

IT'S ALIVE!!!! WHOO HOO!!
Sort of. It has a huge exhaust leak at #6 because the header bolts are not tight, the 2 head studs are weeping and the heater core is leaking. Haha.. Heater core was a long shot.
Now for the "sort of'" part. Engine runs but the idle is labored (like putting an automatic in gear) and it needs a ridiculous amount of timing at idle to run. Like 40 degrees!
I popped the cap this morning and looked at the rotor to reluctor relationship in my distrbutor and in the one in Jonathan's Mustang. It's hard to tell, but it looks like the rotor to reluctor relationship might be wonky in ours.
The other thing that could be wacky is the polarity of wires feeding the HEI. This will prob be the first thing I try since it is an easy change.
I haven't ruled out a vacuum leak or carburetor issue. The wideband was pegged lean and no amount of idle mixture fiddling would change it.
BUT, it does run, oil and oil pressure looks good, and the water temp was stable.
Oh and it moves too. Drove it back into it's parking spot.Last edited by BBR; April 20, 2018, 08:59 AM.Life is short. Be a do'er and not a shoulda done'er.

As I recall my capri idled at 40+ degrees when the vacuum was hooked up. I asked an old ford racer he said don't worry about what it is a idle.

Well this was 40 with the vacuum unhooked. The mechanical advance was fully advancing at 1100 rpm. Yikes. I have it locked out for now so I at least have a handle on what it is doing.
Engine still sounds odd. "Moany" thru the exhaust is the best description I can come up with. Never experienced this before. Starting to think it is carb related, because it sounds good right after startup then goes moany when the afr pegs the gauge lean.
I am going to pull the carb, and go thru it with a fine tooth comb or borrow one to test.
I just love working on cars......Life is short. Be a do'er and not a shoulda done'er.
