  • Off the Workmate and back on the hook! This past weekend was completely filled with family stuff so I am sort of in a time crunch. Today I installed the passenger side header and turbo, new rear main seal, oil pump, pickup, oil pan, dipstick, front cover, block spacer, flexplate, turbo return line, balancer and alternator. It is finally ready to drop back into the car.

    • And it's in! It really went back in pretty easy. No major hang-ups at all. The only problem I know of is the old filter relocator has a crack in it. So I will need to get another one or just get a short filter like I have been running.

One surprising thing that happened was that the down pipe darn near fell into place. That never happens.

        • In the interest of full disclosure, I fired it up last night and it didn't have any oil pressure. I had prelubed it with the drill and everything seemed fine but had no pressure when I lit it off. I suspected it was the oil filter relocation kit so this morning I grabbed a Napa 1335 shorty filter. I usually use the Wix version but it was not available locally. After work I removed the kit, put the filter on, pulled the distributor, prelubed the engine, verified oil pressure, reinstalled the dist and with fingers crossed, lit it off. Oil pressure popped right up and it ran fine. I don't know why the kit wasn't working properly. I have had it for years and have used it on several cars. Oh well, it has a crack, so it is junk anyway.

I just need to fill it with water, set the base timing and it should be ready to rip.

I'll make a more detailed post later, but the dang thing went 11.73 @ 120.22!!

            Expectations exceeded!!

Feel like doing back flips right now!!

            • The adventure started on Friday afternoon. I left work a little early and went to the shop. I set the base timing, which really turned into nothing because it was spot on. Win. With that done, the moment of truth for the first test drive was staring at me. Let's go! I made several laps around the parking lot and then took it out for some street driving. The car did great, so naturally we needed to test it a little harder. Pulled into the parking lot and gave it all the beans and did a giant burnout. Nothing broke. Win. Pulled back into the shop and leaned out the idle quite a bit because I kept having to fatten it up when the other engine was eating rod bearings. Lol. Once I was happy with that I aet about changing tires and getting it ready to racing the next day. I ran out of time and had to leave to go to a high school football game. After the game I came back with the trailer and loaded everything up.
We pulled out of Amarillo at 5:30am on Saturday and headed East for the 4.5 hour trip to Thunder Valley Raceway in Noble, Ok. The trip was uneventful and we arrived at TVRP right at gate opening time, 10am. We found a good pit spot and our buddies we able to pit right there near us. Win.

We flew through tech (Win) and soon they were announcing that the lanes were open for qualifying. No time like the present! We had no idea what it would run and quite honestly, I just wanted to to go A-B without chucking the rods out. --- I'll pause here and remind you that all along the goal for this turbo project was for it to run like it did on the nitrous, 12.20's @ 113. --- We got to the lanes, and shortly Judd was up. The plan was just mat it, get an A-B pass and log some good data. Judd does his job and the the scoreboard lights up with a 12.06 @ 118. Win. Heck yeah!! Judd rolls back to the pits and is grinning ear to ear! We look at the datalog and it is really rich at WOT. Like 10.4:1. Everything else looks great so we decide to let it cool (wasn't really warm though) and then go up for another. This time, Judd tried to bring the boost up and it just slid the front tires right out of the beams. Not win. I text him to just come back to the lanes and he makes a hot lap. This time he brings the rpm a little and was rewarded with a 12.01 @ 118. Win.

We take a break, eat a burger, lean out the top of the fuel map a bit and then come back for one more shot. Judd brings up the rpm a little more and lays down an 11.73 @ 120.22! WIN!! I was COMPLETELY surprised!! I was expecting a 11.9x and was blown away that it picked up 2 mph! We got a racecar!! Our friend were at the pits and Judd was fist-pumping out the window!

Check the car over and everything is great. No leaks, no overheating, it is just working. It seems happy, so we decide to leave it alone for the finals. The Buick Judd was paired up with was a no-show so he had a bye run. Kind of a bummer but he still gave it the beans and made a full pass. He ran 11.83 @ 120, so our good pass was backed up. Win. Team Ford outnumbered Team Buick this year and some really really fast Ford's ( several 7 second Mustangs) showed up. The final score was 46-4 with 2 Buick wins coming as the result of bye runs.

We loaded up afterwards and went to a local restaurant for a delicious dinner and some post-race bench racing. We hit the road at 8:00pm and pulled up to the house at 12:30ish am. It was a looong but super super fun day. Win.

Car ran great, and seemed to be happy to make lap after lap. The converter change and tighter lsa cam seemed to really perk it up off the line. We noticed that boost was higher than we expected and that was due to boost creep. It would come up to 8.5 psi and then slowly creep to 13.5 by the end of the run! Yikes! I am thinking it may be caused by the location of the boost reference line on the throttle body because boost was rock solid with the blow thru. Intake air temps were manageable with the highest being 165 degrees on the hot lap. Ambient air temp was a little over 70 degrees so it may need some help when we run it in the summer. Time will tell.

So we finished the day with a running car, new bests and memories to last a lifetime. Win.

                • Judd and I decided to go out to the last TnT of the year at Amarillo Dragway. If you know anything about Amarillo then you know the wind blows. All. The. Time. We just had several days of high winds, but last light was perfect. ZERO wind and cool temps. Burnout smoke was just hanging in the air. Pretty crazy to see here.

It was a fairly busy night being the last TnT and the night before the King of the Panhandle race. Judd got in 4 passes. First pass was exactly as it was run at Ford v. Buick. We had not touched the car since. It went 12.38 @ 115. Definitely shows what going from a density altitude of 1700 feet to a density altitude of 4250 will do. Each subsequent pass was quicker than the last as we cautiously tweaked the tune. Last pass of the night was an oh-so-close-an-11, 12.02 @ 118. Still leaving off the footbrake on basically zero boost. We leaned it out just a little to get the WOT average afr into the 11.5's and also added one degree of timing to it 2 times. Water temps were in the 150 degree range (except when Judd forgot to turn on the fan in the staging lanes... Haha) and intake air temps were also in the 150 degree range. Car ran fantastic and it was fun because some of Judd's friends came out and hung with us.

This was the longest drive it has been on since the efi conversion and Judd went on and on about how good it drove on the way out and the way back.

Great way to end the season. Can't wait until Spring!

                      • Drove it home for lunch today. Judd is right, it drives really good and doesn't do anything weird. Turned onto my street and laid down some 250 foot long black marks. Haha. Neighbors will probably blame my neighbor across the street that always hot rods around in his Corvette.
