You'd probably go through a whole box of blades using a sawzall! Randy said he has doubled up the hardened washers too.

All that aside, I'll bet a chop saw will work just fine as long as everything is well secured so the bolt can't move. A little grinding on the end of the bolt to finish it off and, as John said, a die to fix the threads and everything should be OK. I'd do it.

anyway my buddy at work runs a top sportsman car seen the pick of your head gasket and was amazed lol thought he was fall over in amazement. Sorry it was you but at least you found it before the drive of drag week.

haha that's funny. That gasket is pretty thrashed.
Oreilly Auto parts FTW! Ordered my gaskets at lunch and they were here this afternoon! They are starting to know me on first name basis there .... not sure if that is a good thing or not!Last edited by BBR; September 22, 2011, 07:12 PM.Life is short. Be a do'er and not a shoulda done'er.

Block decks are cleaned and bolt holes have been checked. I'll probably be ready to put at least one head on tomorrow at lunch.
Trans: Local trans shop owner that is a friend of mine (and has been in the business for many many years) suggested checking the intermediate servo to see if it has a bad seal to cure my 2-3 shift flare issue. He said it sounds like the servo is releasing too quick/early. I looked today and I *might* be able to get it out of the trans by just dropping the trans x-member and letting it pivot down slightly.Life is short. Be a do'er and not a shoulda done'er.

good about the engine....but the transmission...dang...I'm sure glad the GM transmissions dont have much sticking out the sides or the top that you have to work on. Makes life easier
Bob--I still go to a parts store like the old ones (it's been in town for over 50 years), it does make things nice. he gives me old paper catalogs, etc tooLast edited by squirrel; September 26, 2011, 01:07 PM.My fabulous web page

Yeah, but I can do this w/o dropping the pan! Using a turbo 400 has crossed my mind, but so has *a lot* of other stuff. lolLife is short. Be a do'er and not a shoulda done'er.

Everything looks good, flat, etc so far. My hypothesis has changed as I do more research.
Possibilities:
-> Deck surface / head surface not entirely clean when I put the original head gaskets on.
-> Simply the wrong gasket for the application (aluminum head / cast iron block)
-> Extended periods of sub freezing weather last winter with little antifreeze in the system.
-> 24lb radiator cap
-> All of the above or any combination thereof.
I'm feeling confident this will fix the problemLife is short. Be a do'er and not a shoulda done'er.

did you find any real evidence of bolts bottoming out, or does that all look ok?My fabulous web page

what about potential tuning issues, are you running a wideband at least to see how the mixture is under load?www.realtuners.com - catch the RealTuners Radio Podcast on Youtube, Facebook, iTunes, and anywhere else podcasts are distributed!

I checked the bolt holes for debris and bottomed a head bolt into them and measured it for free space. There was plenty.
I do not have a wideband on it. It is jetted 82/88 which should be on the richer side of things. Exhaust ports are black, plugs look nice. Gaskets were not torched, they were just mushed out. EVERY cylinder had some gasket distortion so that makes me believe it was purely a head gasket sealing issue. I was lucky in that they failed inside the engine instead of barfing water on the track.
Heck, with the leaky head gaskets, there's probably no way it could have ever detonated as it had it's own water injection going on! HahaLife is short. Be a do'er and not a shoulda done'er.

errr... did they ever get re-torqued? Sorry, I didn't see if you already said that.
Can you measure the deck on the block for smoothness? Maybe your gaskets didn't like their sealing surface... cometics are supposed to be really fussy about the deck texture, maybe the ones you used are grouchy too? Can you copper paint a gasket going to aluminum?Flying south, with a flock of bird dogs.

The original gaskets were never retorqued. I have never retorqued a set in my life, but I sure will on this next set! I've read that the blue gaskets are fine for stock type cast iron rebuilds but were not recommended for higher compression and/or aluminum heads. I don't know about using copper coat on a regular head gasket. I think I will just install them clean and dry!Life is short. Be a do'er and not a shoulda done'er.
