I'm glad to hear that. I was wondering. When I was kissing the pistons the bottom end didn't show anything unusual, but yours was faaaar worse with actual failure.

If you look at the hole drilled in the piston boss, that is your piston weight 'adjustment'. You could do four of those in each new piston, one on each boss and easily match the old piston weight and thus avoid the re-balance. I absolutely would mag the rods though, you may have read what happened to Jay Brown. I think he could have caught the incipient beam failure had the rods been magged before the latest re-assembly. Same goes for the crank. I pulled the Scat forged 4.5' arm out of a previous 588" build after that particular engines' roller lifter failure and we found radial cracks in one of the rod journals. 10-4 I hear you loud and clear. I'd hate to rebuild only to splatter it again in short time.Life is short. Be a do'er and not a shoulda done'er.

glad to see there's no obvious damage to the bottom end...here's hoping the news stays the same when you get them checked by the machine shop. Otherwise you may wind up looking at aftermarket blocks and a 588+ cu in build ... hmmmRich

Not HF/Northern Tool, but not far from them! It was 62 dollars or so on ebay. Not too expensive and soooooooooooooo much easier than snap gauges.Life is short. Be a do'er and not a shoulda done'er.

I have the same one - but it came in a black plastic case - LOVE it - as Dan says I use it for the cylinder bores, and to check all the bearing journal diameters. I got a set of 0-6" mechanical digital micrometers - so bearing clearance is easy, measure shaft OD, bearing ID and subtract - no more plastigage! There's always something new to learn.

Pistons are ordered! I thought about ordering them through race-mart.com because their price was a bit better than Summit. However a quick Google search yielded very mixed customer experiences. I've always has good experience with Summit (except that one time when I was trying to order an electric water pump on drag week!!) so I figured the extra cost was somewhat justified.
