I used Mahle 4390MS's on the last build. Drop in, standard tension. I had no complaints with them, so I figured I'd probably use them (4420MS this time) again.
I'm always open to suggestions though.Life is short. Be a do'er and not a shoulda done'er.

Popped the new block on the stand this weekend and fiddled with it a bit. It had been sitting in previous owner's garage for quite some time so it was really dirty and 2 of the bores had a tiny bit of surface rust. The weather was nice, so I drug it out in the driveway, took my hone and hit all 8 holes and they cleaned up very nicely. Then I washed it good with my brushes, soap and water to make sure it was all clean inside and out.
Just for grins, I installed the old main bearing in the new block and checked the clearance. I am digging the new bore gauge. SOOOOO much easier than using the snap gauges! All the mains measured out good even with the old bearings. I will still replace them with new ones as a few have marks from a little bit of trash going through at one point.
I measured the bores too. If the new pistons have a dimension differential similar to the old ones, (which they should) the piston to wall clearance should be right in the ball park. Admittedly it's kind of a crap shoot buying a block that is already bored and honed, but I really don't anticipate it being a problem. (Fingers crossed - haha).
Overall, I am very happy with the block and can't wait to paint it and start putting it together.Life is short. Be a do'er and not a shoulda done'er.

Use an outside mike to measure the piston diameter near the top of the skirt, 90 degrees from the pin. Lock the mic at that size. Then set the bore gauge to zero inside the mic. Then you can read the piston to bore clearance directly on the bore gauge.
I suggest you make sure to measure the bores all the way to the very bottom. I've seen a couple cases where the block was not honed full size at the bottom of the bore, which results in serious problems. Just one more thing to double check
Sounds like you're having fun!My fabulous web page

That's exactly how I measured the main clearance. Measure crank journal, lock, set bore gauge, measure bearing ID. Makes it very easy!Life is short. Be a do'er and not a shoulda done'er.

Changing up a little. I decided to ditch the motor mounts and use a motor plate this time. I have always like the looks of a motor plate. It will allow me to mount my fuel regs up front for a cleaner look and lower temp area.
This one is a 3/16" thick steel plate that I will run w/o a midplate and a rubber trans mount. I will probably fabricate a fore/aft limiter of some sort to eliminate and movement.
It looks like this one in Chris's car.

that'll put a lot of weight on the trans mount, won't it? I did that with my pickup years ago (not a plate, but similar) and had troubles with the transmission mountMy fabulous web page

I'm with Squirrel.. I have seen guys drop 460's in cars using plates off the heads, granted, it's not "proper" every one of them ends up with either a broken tail shaft or bell.. Also these guys were hitting which I'm pretty sure you will not..

I'm not worried about it. It's been done by lots and lots of people over the years. I may re-fabricate/reinforce the trans mount though because I originally modified it to clear the headers. It works ok, but I've never been real happy with how I did it.Life is short. Be a do'er and not a shoulda done'er.
