No they do not need to be completely enclosed. Just a hat and some minor carb modifications and you are good to go.

Looks like a good way to burn up a turbo. Yikes.

That's the oil feed hole in the line kit I bought. The tiny hole is probably not a problem with a ball bearing turbo as they are supposed to be restricted, but that would kill a journal bearing turbo (what I have) in a very short time. Glad I looked at it!Life is short. Be a do'er and not a shoulda done'er.

I had been watching a MSD 5462 Boost Timing Master that was for sale on ebay. While I was mowing the lawn today I got a notification that the auction was ending in 30 seconds. The price wasn't outrageous so I logged in and tossed a bid in with a few seconds to spare and won. Haha. $78.
The 5462 is the universal BTM that MSD no longer sells, so I was happy to snag it. It can work with a variety of ignitions and distributors.
Judd went up to the shop and worked today for a while. He got the oil feed fittings on the block all set up, fittings attached to the turbo, and the clutch cable re-routed away from the driver's side header.

More turbo fitting madness. Judd went to put the fittings on and the now drilled out feed fitting fit fine. The drain line flange fit with a little coaxing, but there was noooo way the pipe thread -10an fitting was going to clear the exhaust flange. So I did what any self respecting diy'er would. I took a flappy wheel to the flange. Problem solved. Haha.

The MSD arrived today. It is used, but looks to be in good condition. It came in an MSD 6462 (6BTM) box so I figure someone replaced this one with a 6BTM in order to get the rev limiter functions.

Judd and I took time yesterday to do some work. We made good progress. Headers, crossover, wastegate, wastegate dump tube, turbo, turbo oil feed and drain lines, etc. Everything it reasonably well. The crossover was a little tight but we got it in there just fine. Getting the bolts in the turbo flange was probably the hardest thing we did. A couple are very difficult to get a wrench on. Next job is finding a place to install the ignition box.
