That's cool. Thanks for the tip, I will have to look into it.

Carby: I've been dreading cutting the choke horn off my 650 big time. Just didn't want to do it and have to clean up all the mess, etc. So, I was on Holley's site and saw that they currently have main bodies on sale with free shipping. I bought an 650HP main body. No choke horn, adjustable air bleeds and all that good stuff. Plus, it comes with all the gaskets for a rebuild.
I also worked on the downpipe a bit more. I was not happy with how it was fitting between the header and the frame rail so I cut some tacks and shortened it so it would be correct. It probably would have been fine, but I might as well do it right the first time.Life is short. Be a do'er and not a shoulda done'er.

Looks like it's about time to build a blow thru carb!

Pulled the old 650 apart today. It came apart easy since it has not been long since I rebuilt it. The new main body from Holley comes with a whole bunch of new gaskets and stuff. I was happy I did not have to source those separately. I installed new nitrophyl floats in both bowls but that is all I had time to do today.

Had a good day in the shop yesterday with Judd. We finished modifying the carb, put it back on the car and then bent up some vent tube extensions. Judd installed the new dipstick tube and header wrapped the hot side where it is near the steering rack bellows. We routed the vacuum/boost lines to get everything connected. I installed an 02 bung, finished welding up the down pipe, set my self on fire and header wrapped it. The pipe drops down between the 3 & 4 header tubes, then kinks toward the engine and then 90's toward the rear of the car. The intent was to leave plenty of room to r&r the starter. I am very pleased with how it turned out.
The "make it run" list is really short now:
1. plug heater hose outlet on pump
2. fill with water
3. finish wiring up alternator
4. drain stinky gas
5. set fuel pressure
6. set carb floats
7. throw a battery in it
8. turn the key and blow it up
Blow thru carb: Really all we did was change the main body to a choke-less body, change the floats to nitrophyl, drill out the power valve protection check ball, increase the size of the power valve channel restrictions to 0.075" and make vent tube extensions.

The http://www.hangar18fabrication.com/blowthru.html write-up is the basis for my blowthru. It covers a complete rebuild of the carburetor so there is a lot there you don't need if your carb is in decent condition.
Things we did:
-Change the main body to a choke-less body - choke horn will disrupt airflow into the primaries so it needs to go and the choke rod hole needs to be filled.
-Change brass floats to nitrophyl - brass floats are flimsy can be crushed under boost, so they need to go
-Drill out PV protection - positive intake pressure will close off the check ball and cause the PV to not function
-Drill out PVCR's in metering block - Instructions recommend 0.078" for most builds. I went with 0.075" because that was the bit I had.
-Seal top plugs on metering block with JBWeld - the plugs can leak boost so they recommend sealing them with an epoxy.
One last thing not covered in the instructions:
-Make vent tube extensions - these help pressurize the bowls to help maintain reasonable jet sizes. This is important for off boost or low boost driving. You can keep your jet size low enough to run clean, but will still provide ample fuel under boost.
Pretty simple stuff. The instructions also recommend 50cc accelerator pumps and the larger needle and seats but I think they are shooting for quite a bit more HP that we are.

Holy cow what a frustrating afternoon.
Threw a battery in. Set fuel pressure and checked float level. Good to go. Filled it with water, hit the key.... Nothing. Fuel is not shooting from the accelerator pump squirters. What the heck? Mess around with it some more and realize it has no spark. Lovely. Cranking seems odd. We pull the bowls and metering blocks and realize I put the wrong metering nlock gaskets in. These did not seal the accel pump passage and was just shooting fuel into the PV cavity. Filled the motor with fuel. Pull plugs and blow it out. Then we wire up an HEI module and we have spark again. Turn the key, it lights off perfectly. It runs for a minute and I start to gently wing the throttle and it dies. Go to start it back up and nothing. No spark. Swap to another HEI, still nothing. This thing is driving me nuts.
I'll figure it out, but dang it is frustrating!!
On a positive note, the turbo spins and nothing leaks so we did good on that part.

This thing was about to drive me bananas.
I grabbed an old 460 distributor that I used to run in Nanner. Connect it in place of the 302's distributor. Spin it and it has spark for about 2 seconds then nothing. Keep spinning and it randomly decides to spark. I monkey with grounds and swap a different coil in and still random spark. My buddy Jonathan touches the hei + with the test light while I am spinning and it sparks for a few seconds and stops but it was somewhat repeatable. It made me think it is a grounding issue of some sort.
Today I pulled the hei module out of my old reliable BBF hei distributor, connected it up, hit the key and the 302 literally lept to life.
That means the old module was bad AND both of the new ones I bought. Crazy.
We have the proper turbo noises now. Whoo hoo.
No video or anything yet because I had to jet to go do Christmas stuff.Life is short. Be a do'er and not a shoulda done'er.

This particular MSD box can be used as an ignition and boost retard or simply as a boost retard with an existing ignition. My hope was to use it as an ignition and retard, but the ignition part does not seem to work. So the next thing I will do is wire it in only as a retard and see if it functions. If not, I will probably open it up and have a look inside.Life is short. Be a do'er and not a shoulda done'er.
