This Ranger - well - it's a strange project for me - I know it will be fun when it's done but I'm already thinking of the next thing - sorry to hijack - but I'm leaning toward making it satin gray so I don't have to worry about how straight it is - simply because I don't have time to worry about how straight it is - and - well - I don't care about it that much.
It will be a body work and paint experiment for me - and it will be all one color - that is my goal for it looks wise....

        all in good fun.

us mope and ford guys have to form allegiances sometimes to fend off the bowtie boys. ;D

seriously - what I really like about this place is how we're all in it together - no matter what project IT might be! 8)

Heh, I should get into stand up as well as welding sheet metal...

Minor rust to me is two spots on the lower rear passenger quarter, one spot on the drivers side rear, and two spots where the T tops meet the roof. That is minor rust, the GTO has a little bit of rust. I have had cars with more and worse rust than this one..

Didnt get anything done on it the last two days, been doing family stuff and other things around here. I want to get back in the shop this week, and get the welding done. I want to start shooting primer pretty bad, I have good weather, nice and dry and cool temps. Perfect for painting.

            Re: 65 GTO

I got quite a lot done today. I hacked up the roof panel from the Tempest parts car and salvaged the roof leading edge and most of the channel. I also got the A pillar cover off and it just needs welded up after some patching. After that it is on to the passenger side A pillar, fixing the holes in it, and sealing the lower channel to the cowl. Not sure how I will do that, but I know I need to fill in some large gaps in the cowl. After that, I can concentrate on the quarter panel, doors, and front fenders. If I have a few more days like today it should be in primer very soon! Let the blocking begin!

I still need to grind the welds but its in there and it looks to be pretty straight. I spent two hours trimming the patch so it would fit with minimal gaps and no overlapping. A little more nerve wracking than doing the rear since I had to replace the entire top section due to rust holes.

Did the grinding on the roof welds, installed the A pillar cover and ground the welds on it. Took a break for lunch and havent been back out. Decided to take the kids to the lake instead, but before we go I wanted to post some pics of what I got done today. Its getting closer to primer and a couple gallons of filler that will get sanded off to make it smoooooth...

I'm worried my A pillars and windshield channel will need that kind of work when I pull the windshield on the Impala.

                That's some nice work.

They ignored it on this one, the glass was held in with black RTV, tar, and some other black colored goop. All it did was make it rust more and leak water into places so it would rust there too. Actually it isnt that hard to fix the channels, the rear one was easy. It doesnt have to look pretty since it is all covered with trim, glass and urethane. If it has a seal like old Fords and GM trucks then you have to get it a bit closer, but one like this is easy. You can make the stuff to fix it. The A pillar was a pain because it has lines in it that show, but if it were covered like in my 70, it would be an easy fix.

In know the lower front channel is rusted, possible gone in the middle, the rear lower is going to be pitted with some holes, there is a big black seal that holds my windows in ($150 a piece)....I am not sure what I want to do with it...I have access to metal scraps and a break so I can make all sorts of patches....its getting them welded in that is an issue...the POS welder I have does nothing but burn thru metal no matter what setting...

If I had the space and equipment like you do I would be all over this thing...but its a bit hard doing it in the driveway of base housing...

I know, I couldnt do anything on base, and they always gigged me on the lawn no matter what I did to it. I was about to spray it with atrazine so the grass would not grow but then I had to go off base cuz the wife left. I have a Hobart Handler 140, its a 110v mig and its all about not putting too much heat in, just enough takes a bit of practice. My 70 GTO has 8 or 9 coats of House of Krylon rattle can paint on it because I couldnt do much with it in base housing. Now I gotta take all that crap off the poor thing, well what the weather hasnt done for me anyway. I feel for you, and that is why when her dad offered me this place I jumped at it. You dont have to ask me twice to get a shop to work in and a yard big enough to hold all my cars and then some.

I want to just toss this POS together and beat on it a bit...I really want to find something nicer with a more cooperative aftermarket. maybe someone else's project they lost interest in or even a nice clean driver that I can make my own....but whatever it is the body and paint will be done...I know I can do the engine and trans and interior....but the bodywork is just out of my capacity....

It was out of my capacity for a long time, I just figured why not learn how since I have the time and space to do it.

I would jump elbows deep into it as well if I had a garage like that...

What did we decide to do with the yello GTO?

Get some primer on the 65 and rip into the 70, get it drivable and make it one color with some cheap enamel. It might get something interesting shot on it just to keep it from rusting while I get ready for the frame off. It was originally Palomino Copper, so i plan to put it back to that, mainly because I kind alike that color it is very different from the rest of the cars in the yard. It might end up Lucy blue for a while, or with a bobcat paint scheme on it. If not that then white or yellow just because they wont show the dents as badly. The drag car is going to get some work tomorrow after I get the mowing done and some fence repaired, but it probably wont get plates and insurance on it. Just costs too much to get it to town like it is.
