I realized I hadnt taken any pics of the 65 recently, and I have done some work to it. I bolted up the fenders, mainly to get them out of the way. I still need to fix the rust and a few dents on them, but all in all I think I will be able to really get moving on this one when the 70 is finished. I moved it to the bigger shed where we store boats all winter so I had room to work on the 70 and the Gran Prix. Her eis how it looks right now..
Its back in the shop, I did more sanding today, knocked off some flash rust it picked up in the other building and got a couple spots of paint I hadnt hit yet. No pics yet, still need to clean the shop and get it ready for winter. Probably going to do that tomorrow.
If you thought it went fast before, wait till you see how fast it goes now!
Been busy but not always with the GTO. Long couple weeks... Had some fun eviscerating and filleting a Tempest today. Just so happens it had quite a bit of metal and other parts I can use. Took along all my power cords and we had 4 feet extra with all of them connected, its around 700 ft. Burned through 15 sawzall blades and had lots and lots of enjoyable quality time in the woods with the skeeters. My bud Andy came along after he got off work, man I owe him big time for all the help today.
This was my second trip to get parts, I unbolted what I could the last time, so most of the front end was gone. Here it is just after I started cutting. It was a nearly complete but rusted car and a tree had crushed the passenger side, so it came apart easy.
I took this as we were rolling up the cords and picking up tools. Still need to carry half of it out of the woods, but this is whats left. See anything you need?
I really like this project ......told me friend Curtis about it and wanted me to ask about the Tempest in the salvage yard....he wanted to know do you think the steering wheel was or can salvagable.................here is his Tempest...thats him in the white hat and black tee by the passenger door......
That steely eyed look I had behind the wheel was me trying see..........
That wheel is still sitting here next to the shop. It has a few cracks in it and the chrome has pitting on it, plus its blue. When more of the snow melts I will get some pics of it, remind me occasionally, right now its buried or I would do it today.
This is where the 65 has been sitting since October, I did a bit of work to it last week, nothing major just some sanding of the surface rust. Im going to order a couple more patches for the front fenders and get things rolling again on it. I've been spending time with the woman instead of being in the shop. Things with her are going pretty well now, so its time to get back to it, as soon as the weather allows and the daily beaters are fixed. Been working on them more than anything here lately.
Finally got back to working on the 65! I got the sandblaster out and worked over the front fenders. Found some nasty rust on the replacement I dug out of the trees, but at least its an easy fix. I wish I could find rust free stuff like the guys in California and the desert.
Also got the first order of parts for it, picked up some fender patches, headlight bezels, and door handles from The Parts Place, fast shipping! Two days when overnight takes two days to get here. I have a whole mess of other stuff coming from OPGI, fuel tank, tank straps, complete wiring harness, and a few other things. As soon as the engine is together, this car is first priority. When I am waiting on parts for it or cant go farther on it I plan to get my 67 Cougar running. I will start a thread on it sometime. The brake parts it needed are sitting in the shop just waiting for me to do it.
A body fenders rust there when they sit under trees for decades. The leaves and crap collect between the hood and fender and there goes the metal. Also this fender was driven in salt, so some of that could have gotten up there and made the mess. Really it looks like a pain but I dont think it will be that hard of a fix.
All the weather stripping is here, the fuel tank and straps, the patches for the fenders, and all I need now is to get the 455 done so I can concentrate on this thing again. It shouldnt be long and I will be painting. I want this car done so damn bad, it feels good to have the funds and time available for it.
