  • 1970 Ford Country Squire 9 passenger station wagon

My wife has been wanting a land barge to haul all of the kids and the kid's friends around town and I found this car and thought I would see if anyone has anything to say about the 390 ford FE engine. It even has the woodgrain fake woodgrain on the sides!!

That 390 is a real trooper, and FEs last forever. Go for it!

108,000 miles and the vacuum headlight covers still work .

edelbrock headed FE with EFI and a 4spd auto would do the trick.

Go for it! This will have a warmed up 383 in it someday.

Wagons are cool. One of these days I'll get started on my 54 ranch wagon.

              Wagons rock.
              390 FE's rock.
it will pass a lot of cars on the way to the gas station - if MPG is high on her priority list - she maybe dissapointed.

I'm not sure how tough it would be to put a modern overdrive auto into it - I'm betting adaptors are available - I've not seen one - a 2wd truck trans would be a good one
(FE bellhousing is not the same as small block or 429/460)
a 3.08 or similar rear gear, a nice set of all season radials, good tunes, make sure the ac and heat work good - and it's the ultimate family hauler!
There's always something new to learn.

I'm not sure how Ford AOD's are. I've seen them built to take some power but not sure what went into them. I've seen adapters for the bellhousings for GM's 700r4 & 200R4 to bolt to the FE engines. That would kick the mileage up a bit.
                Escaped on a technicality.

If you're interested in putting an AOD behind that 390, here's a company that offers an adapter plate to make that possible. It ain't cheap, but it makes it a bolt-on deal.

To make the AOD tough, check out Lentec in Canada. Len Bertrand really knows his way around these units, and can make 'em stronger than a TH400 - no brag, he's got proof.

I had the same car in High School, complete with rumbleseat, yellow paint and fake Woody sidepanels.
                        I miss that car.

Even had power windows. 390 made for a good hauler

In the 70's when I was little and Dad liked to pull trailers for vacation; every other car in the camp ground was a Country Squire and they all had wood paneling. Very few were using Travellalls or Suburbans back then. We were way out using a 73 Coupe De Ville as a tow vehicle.
