  • Beautiful car Rob, even better story behind it. I would like to know some more of the specs of the engine you have in there now, My Olds left the factory with a SBC and needs a proper Olds power plant.

Sorry for the looong delay in replying. Life just took off and I lost track of things. What would you like to know?

      • Cam, Heads, Overbore, stroke, compression, carburetor, exhaust etc. While the TBI 350 moves it pretty well with the 3.23 rear, It's no different than a stock LT1 B-body.

        • This will answer many questions. I'd like to know if you are going to step up to the full girdle and then the results of that. I know it's not cheap. And of course the results will take some time and by then I'll hopefully have one of more 455s built but ain't gonna be nothing like yours.

The follow up article is in the October issue of Hot Rod. On my engine we went with a halo instead of a full girdle. We made a few calls and decided that this should be plenty for my power and torque numbers. Plus its much easier to grind the caps than rework everything involved in the full girdle. After the dyno sessions which was 20 pulls we tore the engine down and measured everything again and saw no issues with the bottom end at all. During the first session we ran into an issue with heads which isn't uncommon with some ProComp heads. We ended up replacing the valves and guides which may have had something to do with the increase in the average HP and TQ but same overall numbers. Also on the first session the 830CFM carb was big enough according to the vacuum readings but now the vacuum readings show I should be using something closer to a 950.

I've put over a 1,000 miles on it so far with no problems. I have been driving back and forth to work with no issues and it pulls hard through all of the gears. I am having an issue with second gear right now and plan on freshening up the Muncie up this winter so I am not planning on going to the track with it this year. I've put enough money in it this year and the wife would not be happy if I put it away broke, last year she was patient enough when I busted the rear end, don't want to push it.

My plan is to get it to the track next spring. Right now I am enjoying it on he streets, it's a great stress reliever after a long hot day at work.

            • I've read Bill Trovato's book and the referred to it many, many times and ran into him at he 2013 LS Fest. From what I've heard, experiences like yours, a couple drag racers, and Bill, the threshold for the full girdle is either 600 or 650 (I'm not likely to achieve either number, hp or tq) and from some computer simulations with as close to exact numbers as possible, I can tell it is relatively easy to make large torque numbers. Relative from a standpoint that I've only played with small block Chevys to his point.

I greatly appreciate you sharing your experiences. This is the kind of information that is hard to find on non-mainstream motors. I look forward to seeing the follow up.
