  • Re: The Pontiac OHC Six

I cheat, I have mine set up to run on 87, it's not a big deal.

But if you have a small engine, maybe there are better ways to make boost.

I can tell you that the blower version of the MINI Cooper S is a hell of a lot more fun than the turbo version. Instant boost response for a driver is fun.

Tomatoe, tomatoe, its all about the application and personal preference.

        Randal,
        Good luck with your project.
Here are some websites, definitely worth checking out.

Thanks Pete. The second link is how I found the engine. The seller found my wanted classified ad there. I've browsed the inliners one a bit. Probably should look at it some more. Welcome to the Bangshift forum!

Got off my butt and finally cleaned off a spot to begin tearing it apart. Start tomorrow? That's Squirrel's 292 crank on the floor.

I'd love to pick that one up for $200, but I have no way of getting it here :'(

Timing is perfect, I have some pictures from tonight

Just did some simple parts removing tonight. Pulled the intake/exhaust manifolds, alternator and timing belt cover off. I would of removed the balancer, but it seems I don't own a puller small enough :'( So I'll pick one up tomorrow.

I'm entirely too used to dealing with Big Blocks, these ports are tiny, no wonder they say there are flow problems :'( Looks like it definately sat for a while, some surface rust on the bottom of the intake manifold and in the ports. Engien still turns over easily.

                        Exhaust #1

                        Exhaust #2 & #3

                        Exhaust #4 & #5

                        Exhaust #6

Rusty two ports are Intake #1 & #2

                        Intake #3 & #4

                        Intake #5 & #6

Clean thermostat housing, the thermostat and housing were both quite clean.

                        The Manifolds.

                        Intake Manifold port.

                        Exhaust manifold port.

This is where the pile of parts will sit for quite some time now.

It is much nicer pulling it apart in the basement compared to my carport. The lighting is a ton better and openning up the heater vents I was comfortably working in a t-shirt.

So Pete, Dan and Jim, how's the intake/exhaust looking compared to the Chevy?

                          So you're gonna use a 292 crank?

How much more stroke will this
                          give you?

What kind of cubes will you end
                          up with (overbore?)

wow, it actually has individual ports. Not shared.

Hopefully not much water got in there.

The 292 crank might fit, it might not fit, pistons to make it work might cost a fortune.

                              A few stock engine specs:
                              250cid or 4.1L
                              3.875" Bore
                              3.53" Stroke
                              Rods 5.7" long
                              1.92" Intake valves
                              1.60" Exhaust valves
                              ~8.5:1 Compression
                              Forged Rods (to be verified!)
                              Cast Crank
The Stroke goes to a 4.13" Stroke, iirc. Punching that into a calculator, of course gives me 292 :P I thought 292 blocks had taller decks for the additional stroke...hmm. I've mentioned before there seems to be conflicting reports of it being done. As Jim says, pistons and even rods may be a fortune to make it work.

So Jim, is the individual ports a good thing? You and I both hope not much water got in.

yeah, having a port for each cylinder is neat. Also the intake ports look like they are raised a bit, and the valves are angled as well, right?

The 292 has a 1.75" taller deck than the 250 chevy engine
