    You and I must think alike - I'm pulling the 3.27's from Monica's GT for the notch and putting 4.10's in hers.

    Thanks beags. I think my 84 will get the stock 3.27 when I go for 5 lug ( fuel economy) and the 98 might be getting 4.10s when I go 4 valve.

    pretty good link - 180 for gears new and the crush sleeve. There have been plenty of times I've read and seen where the factory shim pack is the right stack height with new FMS gears. MMFF's archives probably have several gear install stories as well. There are links inside this link to vendors install pages too.

    With all the questions recently like 'can I install my own gears?' or 'can I swap to an open carrier from a LSD unit?' I figured it was appropriate time to bring this up for everyone to benefit from. I made this post in a thread a while back, in effort to enlighten the thread on what is...

    If you do a gear swap and it's not to much trouble, could you do a how to or a what's what of the install? I have never personally done one and rather not pay someone to do it.

    Perspective... Not as hard as they are made out to be..
    Just need to get your mesh, coast and power marks right with the fewest tearaparts.. For some reason, shims do not like being banged on... I set up rears for flatbed's 14 bolt, 3-12 bolts and several derby rears with just chisels (dulled ones) and brass drifts..
    So far they all are still in use.. Helps to have a dial indicator...
    Just don't nick anything or set it up tight nor loose..
    I set up the derby rears with no slack between forward and reverse because they get slap shifted. Teeth less likely to be snapped off..
    Use the shims that came with your housing will probably get you the closest to correct.. But I would try the ones that came with the gears and make sure it meshes correctly, before going to the ones from the housing..

    The brass drifts I use were ground ar 45* to one side and one is pencil thin. The others are about 1 inch..

    I was shown how by an old timer, without the dial indicator.. Once you get the feel.. Pretty simple..

    hell yes! sorry, I forgot what this thread was about!!

    I think I have 4.10's for a 7.5, lincoln lock that sucker. Lots of 4 cyl Rangers came with 4.10s or 3.73's, and a spool or welded spider gears will hold up I bet. I tried to find a spool a while back, I suspect the Pinto dirt track guys may have some insight into that.

    Lol which part are you calling project creep? taking it to the drag strip? Not that far out of line of the orignal goal LSR car. The creep would be if I wanted it to look good or make it a street car, not there yet.
