  • Dad and I took the Capri to the 1/8 saturday night, they were running about a half a dozen classes as well as TNT. There were some fast cars there alot of the heads up cars were running 5.0x in the 140's saw one car run 152 mph! After the first round of qualifying the called for TNT cars got in the stageing lane, the guy in front of me gets out of his shiny red 6.0 GTO and walks over and says your car is leaking water. It needs a water pump. Night ended before it started. Glad to know now and not at Maxton. Now I just have to find time to fix it, I have tickets to the State game this Saturday :-/

    • oh the joys of Ford water pumps. I usually start mine by purchasing the studs that surround the water jackets. If I have them on hand, the old ones will come out without busting or being paper thin. If I don't, well, you know how that goes. Bummer you didn't get to run, but on the other hand, it's good it didn't get to half track and water down your tires for you...

      • Got the new waterpump put on today, the old one was open on the back side the new one has direct passageways. It went well so far no leaks (knock on wood) other than idling at 1800 rpms it seems to be running good took it up the road got it up to 5800 rpms in second with a lot of wheel spin. Hoping I can get a few clean passes this weekend!

        • Playing with my calculator but the results seem to be over the top! I wanted to figure out the wheel speed on my test drive the saturday, I know I saw the tach go past the 5500 mark, 2nd gear (1.93), w/ 2.47 open rear, the road was damp light rain on and off all day but is still left a mark. Its only 800 ft between the driveway and the stop sign.5500rpms, 2nd gear, = 88 MPH Wow! really? poor tire... I think I should rotate them left to right to give it a break.

          • Maxton update made one past on saturday 136.8 motor stoped pulling somewhere between 5-5.5k rpms but did not bust up like last time. Sunday morning I adjusted the throttle linkage some try to make sure I have full throttle. Went 136.5 felt about the same. Went to the parts store got a new fuel filter went 137.7968 still feels weak on the top end. I really don't know where to start. I hate to blindly throw parts at it due to the time and money issues. More than likely I will only be able to work on it one weekend before the last Maxton race. I don't know if its running out of fuel, or spark is not good enough, or tuning is off, or the parts are mismatched / junk.

What I have on the car:

97 explorer long block (gt40p heads)
            E303 cam 220* at .050" .498" 110* new valve springs
            edelbrock performer intake (low rise)
            edelbrock 600 cfm carb
            Mac 1 5/8 long tube headers w/ 2 1/2 ball joint collecters (opening about 2 1/4)
Stock mech fuel pump, stock duraspark II

I have a MSD 6al and new coil and plan on putting them on.
I have a set of crane cobra roller rockers but I dont know about p/v issues?
Someone said get an electic fuel pump...

I was running a production class so no tape or cardboard. I could run time only, tape it up remove the DIRECT drive fan and try to get a couple more that way and call it good. What do you think?

            Oh yeah I have videos!

            • #1

#2 the track is ruff but the cheap flip cam and gps mount on the loose back hatch did not help any. (a guy from Drexel University got a video of this run from out side hopefully I can get it)

#3 I am sure by now you can see the driver needs work as well.

              • It sounds good! Is it showing 5-5500 at the end of fourth? I wonder if you could get a bit less rear gear out of a v6 tbird or if it would make more sense to go 5 speed and more rear gear. Rangers have all kinds of ratios in 7.5. How tall are your tires again? I know you put it in here, I just didn't see it.

I wonder if it would like a RPM air gap if it will fit under the hood... I would also think an E cam could pull 6 grand, maybe it's running out of manifold?

                • Beagle, 5k is at the 3 o'clock position you can not see the 6 on the video I am shifting 5-5.5 going finishing around 4500 in 4th. Rear tires are 225/60/15, ~25.6" It could be the manifold I think it is rated 0-5500 around 120 mph 5000 rpms it starts to really stopped pulling.

Third is what 1.29-1.33 with 2.47 thats like a 3.19-3.29 it should love that gear its not putting out the rpms. I thought I would be ending around 6k ish 139.9 ish in third....

                      • Well I deside to get diffrent intake hopefully the Weiand Stealth will pull better on the top end than the edelbrock preformer, with out causing hood clearance problems. Only four weeks till race day, and I will be lucky to get 2 days to work on the car...

                        • Russell, I'd cut a loop out of each spring. The car sits WAY too high for LSR and I'll wager that would help more than you could guess. Might want to start with 1/2 coil as a beginning point. I have the Camaro as low as I can get it and still get it on the trailer. Air shocks in the rear help - I can pump 'em up to load and down to run. Keith says it's still too high and I'm sure he's right.

                          • Dan, I am sure you are right, i was looking at DW's photos and the nose it way up in the air at the mile mark. I should stop trying to run CPRO and get the cardboard and tape out I am sure that would help alot as well, but... How is Mom's car coming? I bet with a tune up and droping the pipe before the cat you can get 95! Block off the grill, 97! Does it have more that one belt? Get ride of the power steering and smog pump 98 mph! You might get 100 if their is a little tail wind

                            • It's still on the trailer right now. I'm trying to focus on the shop but so far Dr. appointments are getting in the way - and wife maintenance (she's worth it). Still making some progress. I'm heading out to start on the hand rails on the mezz in a few minutes.

I'll order up tune-up stuff for the Celeb tonight - probably Rock Auto for cheap Delco/AC stuff. I'm almost ready to slide the Camaro into it's stall in the shop which will open up the driveway to the hoist stall and allow me to get after the Celeb. Things are moving along (finally!).

                              • Long story short I now own a Weiand Stealth and Holley Street Dominator. I plan on replacing the eddy this weekend I want the most power from 3500-6500. Which would you use and why.
