  • TheSilverBuick's project car(t).

So to practice welding while at the same time do something that can put it to the test I decided to build a hand cart. I don't have one, I've wanted one so this is my solution. I possibly could of bought a stronger better engineered one for cheaper(?), but win, lose or draw I'm going to enjoy and abuse this thing. If a weld or something fails, odds are it won't be a major catastrophe.

Here is the parts pile. $40 on the axle and wheels, and $20 in iron.

And the not quite finished cart. I want to weld some re-enforcement pieces on there as well as some strap iron in the middle of each rectangle, but I wore out my last cutting wheel and called it the day. So I'll see about putting the finishing touches on tomorrow.

But that did not stop me from doing some work with it Decided to move some junk around the backyard.

It works great at picking up rear axles. I've been dragging this around the yard, this is much simpler.

Went around picking up the various junk in the backyard and piled it all in a corner of the yard.

Its original intent is to be able to load the OHC L6 blocks and such on it and survive going up and down the basement stairs. However I now see this thing evolving over time. As I was going around the backyard I thought to myself, I bet this would pick up the tongue on the POS camp trailer, I could weld a small catch on the trailer and perhaps pull and push the trailer around using this cart instead of having to grab the tongue and dead lifting. It's about ~150lbs tongue weight unloaded. That's just one idea, I'll be thinking of other stuff too.

I've done some practicing on some 1/8" stuff over the last two weeks. I wanted to do something useful, even if it's not practical.

Once I get some of the bracing welded on, I have a heavy cast iron wood stove in the house I need to move across the room I may try it out on too.

Looks great. We have a two wheel cart here at the apt building that was here when Bill moved in 45 years ago. It has the same wheels as yours. It's aluminum, but heavy and handled me moving the 454 block around.

I have an auto-darkening one, I'd have to look up the brand, but it works good and I have no issue with seeing, but I have perfect vision.

I think it's a great way to start. Good job Randal. Where does the rascal scooter motor go so that it's self propelled?

put some vertical pieces on the back, parallel to the main uprights, even with the back edge of the wheels...so it will go up and down stairs easier. like this.

I actually hate that part of those. Metal sliding on concrete or wood steps, blah. Leverage wise I know why they are there, I just have never liked them and I don't intend on hauling something I'm not strong enough to heave up a step at a time. I'm going to get some shorter braces on it just for support. I want the wheels to be between the load and the ground/stairs all the time. I reserve the right to change my mind later. =P

Now you need to make the welding cart and customizations I told you about when you were shopping for the welder. You'll have the most bad assed welding cart in town if you do it right.
