  • 1990 Mustang LX - project neglect

Low option 1990 LX 5 speed - electric windows and a/c is about it for options. I'm afraid to look at what the several trips being drug up that trailer has done to the subframe connectors. They were welded in many years ago. Eibach 1.5" lowering springs as I remember it. Rides ... uh... firm. Definitely not sprung for drag racing. Oh well.

This poor car has been sitting for 12 years. I don't even what to know what the bores look like on the 342. I pulled a 302 out of a 89 Lincoln LSC to get it back on the road in 5 days, should be interesting. The LSC mill is probably a little tired, with 100k miles on it, but it will hopefully pass inspection with it.

I didn't want to put it in 5k builds because I don't plan on it staying there. It will return to street duty as my dd. Here's the sad story today:

Step one - put replacement glass in RR quarter window. This is when it really lost momentum, was broken into about 11 years ago so the junkies could steal a broken radio. I hope they got busted with it.

For SBG, yeah, I know windows don't make it faster.

Step 1a - 302 from LSC and T5. I should probably wash it all first.

Harbor Freight is trying to lose the cheap orange paint=cheap chinese junk by painting it grey. lol.. they must have hired one of our old managers. We fixed reputations by renaming things. hehe.

I'm almost positive all the sending unit / sensor stuff is exactly the same and the LSC was a SEFI deal so I'm pretty sure my harness will plug right up with no mods needed. If anybody knows different I could sure use the heads up.

A small village of field mice moved into the trunk, maybe step 1b involves vacuum cleaner. The T5 is sitting behind / under all the crap in the corner. I screwed up the neutral gate switch many moons ago so I'm hoping the A9L doesn't care as long as the clutch is down. I don't think I have ever started a manual trans car without the clutch depressed anyway.

Yes, all the engine sensors are the same as the Mustang. The shortblock in my Ranger started in an LSC. The injector harness is different from a Mustang piece, it is missing the dash coolant temp circuit, dash oil pressure circuit, and O2 sensor ground circuit.
Small details but they are of note if you're leaving the upper intake on there. So you'll want to splice into the engine harness and add a ground for the O2s. It's orange at the salt and pepper shaker, goes to pin 49 of the ECU if you want to double check it's location.

My LSC also had a giant alternator with external regulator.

Not sure which side of the connector this is...

What's the skinny on the 347?

I'd squirt some oil in the bores, turn it over by hand a couple of times and let it rip. Never know, it might run fine or smoke like a steel mill in China. I'd certainly check it out before diving into an engine swap unless it is a known problem.

Thanks guys, I have the original injector harness and alternator, good call, thanks Teddy!

On the 342, good question James. Not sure I have enough cam for it, I put it together being told 10.5:1 before I knew to measure stuff a dozen times. It is a CHP streetfighter, new block. I'm not sure if they cut the deck or if it's in the hole. (embarrassed)

I may take a quick look at it but it's not really wired so either way is not all that big deal. I figured the 302 could be a no brainer and I wouldn't even have to swap fuel pumps. I'm flat out of time, and it needs to be inspected. I'm not sure how close it will be with an E-cam in a 10.5:1 (or more) mill, untuned A9L. If I can get that done I'll worry about making it go faster (probably 4.10's first thing.)

On a positive note, I have tags, it's insured now, and it's getting keys.

I figured getting it inspected might factor into the equation somewhere. Good luck!

Project Blender!!! Put three cars in a blender, puree, and pour out one finished one! If all else fails, you can make Margaritas!
