  • Caveman's 'Anti-Rescue' rig '74 4x4

Building it so I can go out and venture to the hard-to-get-to places.

Not to rescue others, but to rescue my sanity by getting away from it all.

3/4 Ton with an SM465 four speed, an NP205 transfer case, a Dana 60 up front and a 14-bolt out back.

This pic is pre-trip, just prior to the aborted 'Red Ball Express' of last Labor Day week.

    Lots more to come.

I tried to keep up w/Red Ball Express thread, did you get the truck home or is it still in AZ?

Hmmm... it's running a little rough... wonder why..
This was a pic in AZ the day I arrived ...pre-Red Ball...

Decided to swap out the 5.13's for the trip (anything for some mpg), got a junkyard 14 bolt with some 3.73s. Nice.... Late night swap thrash, but it is cooler in AZ at 10pm.

No, that jack is not on plywood... just dirt. The dirt is THAT hard out there.

This was 90 feet behind me while i was working on the swap

I shouldn't have even pulled the drums. Brake JOB! Ugh.

A few other pics of general inspection...
Why the hell the prev owner NOTCHED the frame for the power steering hoses, I dunno. But I'd like to kick his ass.

Forgot to take pics of it post-whack. Suffice to say, its a cross between an F1 steering wheel and an egg shaped mess.

          More to come...

Glad I'm not the only one that takes the direct approach.
            Escaped on a technicality.

LT 4 spokes work great there...gets my fat gut away so I can get in and STEER!

I did something similar to the top half of the steering in my '69 Impala SS during crash avoidance in my last street race. The result was my fingers smashed between the wheel and the dash pad. I also gained gut room because I broke the back of the seat. Neither of which improved the drivability of the car.

When we dropped a valve before breakfast on DAY FREAKING ONE of the trip, Dad & I threw our hands up. We punted.

Spent way too much on last-minute return tickets, (that SUCKED) and called the shipper (also serious SUCKAGE). The truck arrived in MA around early Oct, IIRC.

Prep for the engine yank started immediately.

So... figured out why it was running rough... ... sh*t.
...... which begs the question... "where's the rest?"
                      ...Probably in the pan.

Runs MUCH better... but why'd it do that? (poss answers: 1. valve stuck from sitting in AZ desert for 5 years, bending it 2. Dumbass who built it (me) re-used old pushrods

tough old rig. that notch.. it seems I had heard of it. those years were still pounding maine roads when I was in high school.
the big thing was cast iron transfers.. the rest is very hard, not very comfortable..and leaning roads , not friendly.

5.13 is insane..did not know that existed.

there is some years with a 5.5 inch spread in the 8 lug, those fit old subarus..pretty sure that was rare ford, but your rig looks similar to the big pattern, 1 ton looking.

gmc meant something in those years.

So, this era of GM rigs have a nasty tendency to crack around the steering box. Since the engine is out, I'll be inspecting the frame & installing this brace from ORD, aka, OffRoad Design. These guys have been thrashing on GM rigs and have a myriad of fixes for 'em.

So, all loaded up. Went to pick up Dad at hotel (he flew in late the night before) ready to roll out on a cross-country adventure.

It was running slightly rough, but still way better than before when it had the busted pushrod.

It was early AM, Dad & I were hungry for some breakfast... so we hopped in the truck and headed to the restaurant across the street.

As we pulled out into traffic, it sputtered, made some ugly sounds like a spoon in a blender, and it died. Luckily, I had enough momentum to roll into the parking lot.

                              Restart? Uh, no.

I figured I'd let it cool down some, and eat some breakfast, and let my brain cool off.

After breakfast, I called my buddy for a jump (I had killed the battery trying to restart it) and we popped the valvecovers.

                              Merry Christmas. *&^%$#@!!!!
