Yesterday I painted the new water pump and harmonic balancer. I got the pan off the transmission and cleaned that up some more. I got stalled out on that because the wiring instructions for the kit I bought only showed one internal switch where I have 2. Bowtie Overdrives (maker of the kit) says to use the one closest to the outside of the case.

So I started this morning before 9 am with the intention of installing the new harmonic balancer from Summit as the first task of many. The instructions included with the part directed me to boil the balancer or bake it for 15 minutes prior to install so that I would not need an install tool. Here is that balancer ready for 15 min at 215 degrees in the oven:

As my luck would have it, this approach resulted in much frustration, loss of paint and results short of fully installed. I pulled the balancer back off and ran into town to Napa. They "rent" the proper tool for this job. I proceeded with the install and thought "this is pretty slick". Right up until I broke the tool because I did not know were to stop. Unfortunately I could not remove the remnants of the tool and had to remove the balancer again to get the pieces of the tool out of the crank snout.

Install in progress. Despite my best efforts it appears that I installed the motor mount brackets on the wrong sides. I had to switch them with the motor hanging before I could get it to sit down. They are different part numbers so they should be side specific. Anyone have any practical experience on this?

In other news, I ordered these parts from summit last week on Tuesday and they showed up on Thursday. Very nice! These were ordered because I could not find them in my stuff and believed that I did not have them. I opened the packages today and within 2 hours found both of these items I was pretty sure I already had. Oh well, at least is it was only $25.
