  • 1968 Firebird - $500

Some of you have likely been following our car we recently purchased on the General Discussion side. I figured it was time to start a thread under the Project Cars section. I hope to find time to work on the car a few times a month, and will be sure to post updates here. Below is the link with a ton of pictures. I STILL can't get pictures to post here, for whatever reason. Anybody who wants to post a few here, feel free, you have my permission.

WOW, what a deal. A pretty-much complete car for $500. Deals are STILL out there. Best of luck to you!

Worked on the car again this past Friday. Still in the tear down phase, as it will be for awhile. The first forward progress will likely be in the form of new floor pans and trunk pan. Tons of pictures, and working on uploading a walk around video I also made.

This past Friday was likely the last chance I will get to work on the Firebird for a few weeks. With daughter #2 set to arrive in a few weeks, I won't be able to get away. That said, we got a helluva lot more done than I expected! I anticipated only getting the interior dash, cluster, and rest of the wiring harness removed. Not only did we accomplish all that, but we also pulled the radiator, engine, trans, drive shaft, and exhaust. We are basically ready to start the next phase, which is removing the subframe, blasting it, and painting it. Also, at the same time, we will remove the rear in preparation of 9" rear, likely identical to the Moser M9 I'm about to install in my Camaro.

With the engine out, we will inevitably run a BBC and th400. Though I would still love to eventually run a Pontiac 455+, the likelihood seems to be deminishing, for the same reasons people run bbc's, sbc's, and ls engines. We are getting neck deep in this project in a hurry, and can't wait to get back at it. I took a ton of pictures again and will uplaod them and blog possibly tomorrow.

Here is the final update for awhile, as our next baby is due within a few weeks. So this is it until late summer/early fall. Once we get back at it though, things will start progressing fast!

Haven't got back on the Firebird since our new baby arrived, but I have been putting a lot of thought into it and would like some advice. Ultimately, we would like to build a mid to low 9 second car. With that in mind we are starting from scratch, and want to build it right the first time. There is little chance this car will ever return to a predominantly street car, but I would like the occasional cruise night outing. With that in mind, these are the two options I'm pondering.

                    A) Mostly stock style suspension with drag springs/ shocks up front and caltrak leafsprings and caltrak bars out back, along with drag shocks. A 12 point cage and frame connectors, along with 275/60/15 mickey thompson et's.

                    B) Going with an aftermarket full frame, possibly Jegs, which requires their k-member and front suspension which includes a rack and pinion setup. Out back, the frame is narrowed, so a wheel tub is likely and a 4 link setup required. This too would be combined with a 12 point cage and unknown size tires, likely slicks with this option.

Obviously, option B is more costly, time consuming, and perhaps overkill for a 9 second car. Another consideration is whether we will simply bracket race, or try to run a specific class, which could dictate what type of suspension/frame options are allowed. What route would you choose, and why?

Why not a backhalf the car with a four link instead of a full chassis? For the Firebird, there are many prebuilt options that keep the cost down.

Congrats on the little one! Boy? Girl? How's Mama? I think a backhalf car would work, without being too over the top... also giving you rom for a larger tire!

I like the back half idea as well, you can use a larger tire and it looks good. That's what I did to mine. That being said, a lot of guys are running in the nines using just Cal Tracks and a smaller tire like a Stock Eliminator car. Calvert Racing can get you pretty much whatever you need for that setup.

It's really no different than trying to glue them back on after she has her way.
