I took my car to a guy near Fond du Lac WI, fast and the price wasn't more than a couple hundred dollars, he had a big industrial blaster and had it done in one day! My gremlin will get the same treatment later this year. I've taken a bunch of stuff there over the years, easy and cheap. Too bad it's not closer for ya.

Tom - Dad rebuilt the motor, transmission and suspension many years ago. At this point I'm hoping to capitalize on his efforts and not spend a bunch more on those items. Once I get it looking good, in one piece and running I will make mechanical tweaks from there.

I'll spend some time looking for a local equivalent. That sounds like a great deal.

I've also got some frame rails to straighten (cosmetic issues mainly):

Here is a picture that raises a real question. Which holes are supposed to be in the floor/body/etc?? I have alot of these all over the place. Does anyone know of any restoration sources that docuement the holes that should be there? My plan at this point is to fill anything that is questionable.

My body guy stopped out today. He is ready for the car as soon as I can get it to him. My job in the short term is to clean up all the bed liner material, finish scraping the underside and get it sand blasted. Once I get it blasted (I’m planning on farming that part out because it will take me 2 weeks) I’ll deliver it to him for epoxy primer and we’ll finalize the parts list. After he looked at the car thoroughly, I told him I was looking at 5-7k to cover getting it into paint after it is all cleaned up and he thought that that was definitely doable. He said that once he has it, things should move very quickly. My goal is to have it to him by September 14th.

Anyone know any good media blasters in the St. Paul / Minneapolis area?

I finally have some progress to report. This weekend I finished the underside from the back seat area to the back bumper. Outer wheel housings will be replaced so I did not waste time scraping those.

I worked on the front suspension area for a while. It still needs more work. Good news is that the wire wheel is working for removal of the bedliner material.

After that is done, I need to do the interior floor and trunk areas. It is extremely messy work.

In other news, it turns out I only have one nice rocker panel. This one looked great until I hit it with the wire wheel:

Isn't it amazing what a slide hammer can do?

When I was in body shop school (1966), that was how it was done. The stud welder hadn't been invented yet so the options were sheet metal screws and a slide hammer (still have that set-up) or drilling holes and pulling the metal with little hooks while tapping with hammer to get the fold to release. Stud guns work MUCH better!

The third choice, of course, was to replace the panel but that was less common back then - panels were expensive and insurance companies didn't want to pay for them.

So don't be TOO hard on the guy who did this.
