The original plan was to run the 3ow7 in stock form until another motor was ready. After determining that the computer was dead and the feedback Q-Jet would only deliver 7mpg without some reworking/replacing, the plan changed to make it more efficient using what was on-hand.

The 455 I bought came with a points distributor and no ceramic resistor. It would run but for only a few seconds at a time. I bought a Pertronix HEI unit for the 455 but decided to put it in the 3ow7 to replace the computer controlled distributor. At least it would have a spark curve now.

With half the mess out to put the intake manifold on now seemed like a good time to put the distributor in and verify the timing mark on the balancer. Some ham-fisted knuckle-dragger managed to destroy the timing pointer on the 3ow7. Do you KNOW how hard those are to find? After talking to everyone I know that might know and researching every regular parts source I finally found a place that carries them. I bought 2. I put a new timing indicator on the 3ow7 and put a timing tape on the balancer too. It's funny, funny weird not funny ha ha, that Jeg's offers a timing tape for Oldsmobiles with a 6" balancer but the balancer on the 3ow7 is 5.5" and the balancer on the 455 is 6.5". I used the same part number on each, at least I have a reference mark to go by and know exactly where tdc is in either case regardless of how far off the individual degree marks may be.

Since I found a loose tie-rod end during a once-over maintenance fest before driving I decided it would be a good idea to start accumulating the parts to fully rebuild the front suspension. Somehow I've rebuilt the suspension of everything I've owned in the last 20 years. Some might think I like the work while others might think I like corners. And since I was in it for the water leak/manifold replacement I figured now would be a good time to get the front done as I finally had all the parts and rapidly running out of storage space.

To get the left upper control arm off I had to disconnect the lower section of the steering column. This seemed like a good time to upgrade to the Jeep unit Brian told us about in the Buford thread. With the exception of a small amount of clearancing for the upper pinch bolt, it truly is a bolt in.

To get the upper control arms off some things had to be moved. On the left was the steering column, on the right the A.I.R. pump had to come off. This was at least the third time that thing had been off and by this time the computer had been deemed DOA I decided to take advantage of the space available to work with the control arms removed and move the right fenderwell to get to the hole where the computer harness enters the body. I'm not a fan of cutting things when they can be removed completely. I had to unbolt the right inner fenderwell and let it drop down in the back to get to were the engine management harness passes through the firewall. I removed the entire engine management wiring harness and the computer. I used silicone to fill the hole in the grommet where the harness to passes through the firewall and after letting it sit overnight put the grommet back in the firewall. Right after the suspension was rebuilt I finally decided to pull the rest of the emissions controls off the car.

          This...

          becomes this.

At this point I hadn't convinced myself to swap the CC Q-Jet out to something that could be tuned to give better mileage than 7mpg. I had/have an abused 600cfm Edelbrock AFB that I got off eBay last year for much less than retail. With the upcoming GN 200-4r swap, the Q-Jet throttle/tv bracket causes no concern with the transmission's operation. If I swapped to the AFB the I have to get a tv adapter bracket. This is where the issue lies. Edelbrock/Jeg's/Summit/K-Mart all sell an adapter bracket for $25+/- and my transmission builder wants me to use a $125 Bowler tv adapter. Seems to me that I could save $100 to get the same end result. So we came to a compromise; I'll get the $25 adapter now and if he doesn't like the way the trans shifts using that adapter I'll get the one he wants me to use. After all he is giving me a warranty from the time the trans is installed. The trans has been sitting in my shed for four months as of this writing.

To give myself some time to think about which way I want to go I figured that since the front suspension was freshly rebuilt it would be a good time to rebuild the rear. The rear consisted of eight bushings since the original blown air shocks had already been replaced with regular shocks and overload springs had been installed because the rear looked like it sagged with the regular springs. The bolts were incredibly rusty so new ones were used to complete the job.

those don't look that bad. haha. My El Camino's looked worse, every time you would hit a pot hole the trucklet would change directions. It would pull to the left, then pull to the right until I could find a smaller pot hole to try to center it up again. lol. Young and broke. I about had a stroke when I ordered all the front and rear end bolts, factory GM stuff was $$$! I imagine it hasn't gotten any cheaper. I was worried about the shoulders so I ordered OEM replacements.

Those early emissions systems were - um - cumbersome. It was the best they knew at the time and were largely responsible for the EFI systems we love today (nobody wanted more of the junk you showed on the table). Part of the evolution.

Those replacement bolts are grade 8. I don't play with weak hardware. If the local hardware store doesn't have what I need I turn to this company...http://www.boltdepot.com/catalog.asp..._id=81&type=SN.

                      KANTER! Sorry for the hijack..
Bought a couple front end rebuild kits from them..
$200+ for the bushings and tie rod ends.. No bolts.. If I remember right, it was a healthy jump.. Could take off aomething else around here.. We don't use salt on the roads!

If I didn't mention it, as I've posted this part at least three times and it's easy to warble about things the first time around but difficult to remember all the details on concurrent writings, all the bushings front & rear are Energy Suspension red polyurethane pieces, because after 4 or 5 vehicles it's okay to add color, and all the hard parts are Moog items. I learned the hard way that one can get the same Moog part numbers from RockAuto plus shipping for about half what one would pay at O'Reilly. I bought all the parts to rebuild the front of my '97 C1500 from O'Reilly without thinking about price shopping. I bought all the parts for the wagon from RockAuto.

I like Rockauto, and use them, but they aren't all cherry cheesecake. I've gotten to where I won't throw the box and packaging away because whatever they've sold me doesn't fit...

as for O'Reilly and their ilk (autozone, etc) - they're great for oil filters, oil, and anything else that can't be sent through the mail.

My pet peeve with rock auto is not finding out that the order will come from three different warehouses with three different shipping charges until you're at the check out screen
There's always something new to learn.

I didn't mean to imply that I love RockAuto. Just that I found Moog parts cheaper there than locally. I too do not like the different shipping locations notification & extra shipping charges. In this situation, the wagon parts, I ordered things as I could and not all at one time so the wait and additional shipping wasn't as big a deal but it was still about 55-60% the cost of same part locally. As for Auto Zone, hell must be frozen over for me to go there. Never have I ever gotten such lousy, incompetent service. I can only hope it's a local problem and not a company-wide trend. O'Reilly is the closest "dealer" to get my fix but that doesn't mean I love them either. I try to price shop as reasonably as I can and take quality of part vs price as the main factor in my purchasing decision.
