  • Yesterday I searched Craigslist locally, and eBay. CL had zero prospects and eBay had many listings for aftermarket pieces for $200 & up. Then I checked the inventory at the local junkyard eden. I have a list of several cars that are at the lot now that should be good donors of a crossmember or maybe two, in case I muk one up, so I can do the cut & splice mirror image crossmemer.

I still have some small installation details to take care of. The shift linkage rubs the header and it's like wearing a stethoscope while in the car.

Then there is the small problem of not being able to keep it cool. New heavy duty water pump, new 4-core radiator, 160* high flow thermostat tested before installation, and mechanical fan with shroud. It doesn't run any hotter in the car than it did on the stand and I have not had it out for a drive yet either, just a trip around the block is all. I dropped the insurance when the 3ow7 died and haven't reinstated it yet.

    • I did a little junkyard shopping today and learned a thing or two that I wouldn't have thought so without experiencing it first hand.

For starters, transmission crossmembers in B-bodies are not created equal. Cars with a th350 transmission have the crossmember mounted at an angle, that is not square with the frame. Cars with a th200-4r have the crossmember mounted square with the frame, or at least an assload more square than the th350 cars.

Secondly the length of the crossmembers isn't the same for coupe/sedans and wagons. The length difference is about three inches. It isn't important to me because I plan to cut/paste as needed to make a double hump crossmember for my application. But for those interested the wagon crossmember is the shorter version. I suppose it has to do with the frame design. My wagon has a fully boxed frame and so did the one I pilfered today while all the coupe/sedans are partially boxed.

Across brands the sizing (diameter) is the same except for the Cadillac crossmember I pulled. It is beefier than the others. The car was an early '80s Fleetwood Brougham. I guess I was refusing to admit these cars are C-bodies even though they are nearly the same size (by my eye) as the B-bodies of the same year. I should note here that the th350 crossmembers that are mounted at an angle to the frame are also slightly larger in diameter than the 200-4r crossmembers but are not as big as the Cadillac crossmember. I'm going to account the difference in length needed for the angle mount as the reason for the larger diameter, added strength needed for length.

      • This is what I bought. I paid for the three crossmembers and all the other stuff was thrown in. I tried to show it all to the cashier and even laid the turn signal sockets on the counter but she just charged me for the crossmembers. I even got two transmission line adapters, the ones that screw into the transmission case, a carb to vacuum booster adapter, and a fuel inlet/filter case for a Q-Jet carb. Don't ask why I got a fuel inlet/filter case for a Q-Jet, I'm not going to use either of the two Q-Jets I have (at least that's the plan right now), it was just there and I grabbed it. My inner hoarder must have come out for a moment. As I grabbed two of the wheel bearing dust covers off of a '94 Suburban I notice it had brand new brake pads on it. Seriously, brand new, not dusty and could still read the part number on them. I never considered buying brake pads from a junkyard therefore didn't, and never have, packed the correct Allen socket to remove the calipers. If I didn't already have a spare set of brake pads for my truck I'd go back tomorrow for a caliper or something that they'd let me have the pads without charging. Probably backfire big time when trying to get something for nothing.

I too do not like the different shipping locations notification & extra shipping charges. In this situation, the wagon parts, I ordered things as I could and not all at one time so the wait and additional shipping wasn't as big a deal but it was still about 55-60% the cost of same part locally. As for Auto Zone, hell must be frozen over for me to go there. Never have I ever gotten such lousy, incompetent service. I can only hope it's a local problem and not a company-wide trend. O'Reilly is the closest "dealer" to get my fix but that doesn't mean I love them either. I try to price shop as reasonably as I can and take quality of part vs price as the main factor in my purchasing decision.
FYI moog has 2 lines of parts, keep that in mine.. most local parts stores moog is the up sell so they carry the better grade moog, rock auto most if not all the parts unless old stock are the lower line. and no better than the local parts store house brand. and most of moogs lower line is made in china

I didn't know that. Most of the parts from RockAuto looked like old stock as the boxes were in rough shape, faded, looked old. Either way the parts are on the car now but will keep it in mind in future purchases. The part numbers for the Moog parts from RockAuto was the same as the part numbers for the Moog parts from the local parts store so I feel comfortable with what I have.

I've heard the same thing of Spicer parts as well as Moog...not sure how true any of it is...but its something to think about I guess.

              • Having just bought a bunch of Moog parts from O'Reilly, the McParts store alternative was 30% of the Moog price.

                I still bought the Moog.

I priced the Moog parts at O'Reilly and the same parts/numbers at RockAuto. RockAuto had the same numbers with shipping for 60% what O'Reilly listed. I had to order & wait either way so I went for the good parts at the lowest price. JM choice, it's what I was in the moog to do.

                        • I've purchased a lot of parts from Rock Auto, I've also returned my share of parts from Rock Auto. If I have time for that dance, than I'll go there, if not, I buy local. What ever the Moog strikes.

All that means, in the parts world, is that Rock Auto buys more of Moog than O'Reillys and therefore gets a better price.

                            • I got to drive the car today. I think I've come to the conclusion that this 455 likes to run around 210*. That's about what my Vortecs run at but higher than my 385 by 25*.

I have meaning to make a video, I'll try to do the this weekend if it doesn't rain.

I had to adjust the tv cable a little.

I think the carb is too rich and I'll have to work on that this weekend also.
