Nice! Exactly my thinking - I love the ramp truck on the front page today - but the 460/c6 kills it from any real utility as a weekend hauler or drag week tow rig unless you don't mind spending more for towing fuel than the entry fee to the race, or hotels for the week... etc.
I'd use a diesel and overdrive if I were you, or don't bother doing it, unless the OD is just crazy expensive, but I've got to believe a 4R100 won't cost an arm and a leg these days since they've been in super duties since 98.
I watched an old race team truck damned near get given away because it had a 454 TH400 and 4.10 gears. 6 is all it would ever get towing, empty, maybe 8 on a good day. Clean dually crew cab one ton chevy, nice truck with stainless tool box, leg tank and pump, the works, but when gas prices went up - it was a fire sale.... I think the old boss ended up taking half his original asking price (which was half of blue book as I recall) just to get it off the books.

The engine will be behind the cab that you see. There will be another cab added to make it a crew cab. The engine will be under that cab and the floor will be raised to cover it. Or it will be a sleeper. Either way I have my work cut out for me on how to get to the engine. And I'm leaning more to using a 7.3 powerstroke I have. Using a 6 to 10 mpg 454 in it just doesnt appeal to me.

this thing is going to be cool! Is the entire cab going to tilt for engine access or are you going to have the engine farther back with a doghouse type cover like a van?

looking much better... may have to adjust for finished loading of the suspension to center the rolling stock in the fender...

ramp trucks are never short! thing thing is going to be TASTY!
Extended cab for sure - maybe use modern supercab seats that tilt and slide so you can put in rear buckets too....
would you really use a sleeper?

The econoline and the 49 Austin, and the 51 chevy business coupe(both former gassers) are on the back burner now. I'm rebuilding PG's blown blower engine, and rebuilding drivetrain in my 69SS 396 4 speed nova. I MUST BE CRAZY.

It will go down at least 7", and extended cab with sleeper(maybe) and you hit it right on with the bed. The engine will be mounted midship under the sleeper.
