  • The Studebaker Wagon Saga....follow it here

Well my ship has literally come in...well I guess it kind of ran aground, but you get the gist of what I'm saying.

As introduced over in the general discussion section, my 56 Studebaker President Pinehurst wagon is resting at home now awaiting LOTS of attention.

    Some facts on the car:

    1 of 1522 made....yeah seriously
    289 V8 for power
    3 Speed auto trans
    2 door wagon
This was the highest optioned car available from Stude...top of the line stuff, which in a modern world is spartan and devoid of luxury. Ironic.
Last on the road in 1987....been in a field since then so nature has taken it's course.

Some initial photos. Stay tuned because by the time my 2 year old son is having kids of his own, this thing may be road worthy.

    To be continued...

What the Hell is the thing on the dash right above the steering wheel....

That steering wheel needs more work than the whole Chevelle....Yikes.

Other than that is too cool.

The thing inset into the dash is the "cyclops eye" speedo. It's got a ball that rotates around to show you your speed.

There's also an old school compass mounted on the dash.

          Vision

You have vision Brian or you wouldn't have picked this thing up.

I've had several houses that required vision! ;D

This will be quite an adventure - I look forward to following your build.

Congrats on the full page spread in HR this issue btw -
pretty funny to see Dan Millen picked as the hot shoe for the crate engine thrash - he's a mod motor mustang guy from Detroit running a pile of crate chevies in a chevelle!?

Brian, what's that round thing in the drivers side kick panel? Looks like a speaker but I wouldn't think there would be one down there. Have fun with it, it will be awesome when it's done.

Yeah, Dan is definitely a Ford guy. I just wrote a feature on a TT BBF mustang motor he built for Frank Pompilio out of Ontario Canada....makes 2100hp!

The guest editorial deal is cool and it was neat that Rob asked me to do one. Hopefully it won't be the last time! Writing the features and stuff is ablast but it is greally fun to express an opinion and have people call you an idiot.... :D.

I'll keep you guys posted. I hope to make some progress doing something...anything, when I get back from Lead East in NJ this weekend.

Blue, if you look at the front fenders they have little air grabber doors that you can pull open to ventilate the car. Those round things are the exits from the ducts that funnel the air into the car. 65mph AC I guess!

Cool! My 54 has something similar but they aren't as fancy.

Re: The Studebaker Wagon Saga....follow it here

over on the bateau boats board I saw a lot of impressive boat restorations happening in "tents" outside.

I understand you have a garage rental lined up.

Getting all your tools and what not set up there, and power for a compressor / sawzall etc will be your first hurdle... hopefully the owners / neighbors of said garage will be happy to deal with the ensuing mechanical mahem.

So - I figure we should lay off him a little guys - give him a couple weeks to get the garage set up and the vehicle moved -- what should we give him? Bare frame by October 1? ;D

Man you guys are all heart!

Ironically a car show is getting in the way of this project right off the bat. My wife, my son Tom (my intrepid companion), and I are loading up the family truckster tomorrow afternoon and hauling tail down to Lead East, the mondo car show in Jersey. I'm covering it for HRM. I'll see some inspirational stuff down there I'm sure.

The garage situation is probably going to take care of itself. It seems my neighbor George (who lets me use one of the bays regularly, just not for "extended stays") has taken a real shine to this whole thing and it will reside at his place...roughly 200 yards from my front door. He has been fighting the Big C and he's a total gear head (former professional motorcycle drag racer) who wants something to be involved in. He has a weirdo son that he doesn't like all that much and loves the fact that I'm into this stuff. In an odd conversation a few weeks ago he told me that if he doesn't make it through the cancer deal....all his tools (and there's a shitload) are mine. Cool but pretty awkward when someone says that to you.

                            Anyway....that's the scoop on that.

                              Brian -
Loved the editorial. Doesn't mean you're NOT and idiot - those two things are not necessarily linked!

The wagon is AMAZING! I'd have to do a kind of resto-rod. Get Joe Roberts to help you build the 289 - not THERE'S "Dare to be Different"!

On the tools thing - I hope you realize the honor that he has given you. I've spent a lifetime accumulating tools (most good, some not so), and who ends up with them is a Big Deal to me - not that I won't be using them for many years to come. Keith did a thread on old tools a while back, and we both talked about the wisdom that they contain. Cherish this gift - it's more than just some hardware that can turn a bolt.

                              Have Fun
