I did find that Monte Carlo lowering springs are basically stock Camaro springs. Thanks to a little research and some helpful information over at MonteCarloSS.com, I ordered a set through my wife's NAPA connection. I believe I chose the best option... look at these specs:

    Stock Monte SS:
    # Coil Spring Coils : 8.26
Coil Spring Free Height : 14.63"
    Coil Spring I.D. : 4.08"
Coil Spring Load Height : 11"
Coil Spring Type : One Tangential End; One Square End
    Design Load : 1530
    Spring Rate : 421
    Wire Diameter : .687"

    1991 Camaro Z28
    # Coil Spring Coils : 6.76
Coil Spring Free Height : 13.26"
    Coil Spring I.D. : 4.08"
Coil Spring Load Height : 10.75"
Coil Spring Type : One Tangential End; One Square End
    Design Load : 1538
    Spring Rate : 598
    Wire Diameter : .718"

There is a spring that I assume is for the 1LE option with a spring rate of 649 but the design load is for 1690 lbs-- a 150 lbs more than stock. From the info that the MC SS guys have shared, those springs don't really lower the car much. These won't either, but it should sit lower than stock Monte springs and more importantly it will handle significantly better.

My cost? $68. ;D Sure beats paying $150 for "lowering springs".
Kewl what are those springs coded as........... 5658? are they coded as another number? I see a .25" difference but will the settle more than that after awhile?
That steely eyed look I had behind the wheel was me trying see..........

      Re: Schtauffer's 85 Monte SS

5658 would be a Moog part number.... the junk I got came from Napa. Sorry, don't remember the part number, but their website is pretty straightforward and lists all the details you need for springs. Between Camaro, Malibu, Monte, and S-10 there are a lot of options available with all the different engines and trim levels and everything. www.napaonline.com

It's great. Not stiff, but not Caddy-smooth either. Very much like a 3rd gen Z28. Actually with the tall spindles and now those springs the car feels just like a Camaro.

              Good lookin' stuff!

My intentions are to run a mechanical clutch. Simple, cheap, effective.

I'm fortunate to have a brother who has a barn full of necessary things like a/g body clutch pedal & z-bar setups. ;D

If he ever demands back all the parts he owns on my car... well, it will pretty much just become his car. :D

Could be his plan, make you do the labour then collect the finished product for a small price since you end up owning so little of it!

Everytime I see a G-body Monte SS, I get nostalgic for my old '87 T-top. I'm gonna have to get me another one..

Great stuff - high quality shiny new parts!

Gene - do you have the stuff to check the run out of the new bellhousing?

You need to make sure the input shaft of the trans is still centered on the crankshaft centerline.

You may need off-set dowel pins to correct the problem if there is one.

You need a dial indicator - should be instructions with the bellhousing. Do NOT assume it's lined up - it could be the source of many problems in the future if it's off.... could even spell an early death for the input shaft bearing....
There's always something new to learn.
