Thought I would put up a little bit about my car. She is a 1982 Ford Escort 2 door with the stock 1.6 and a cheapo rustoleum paint job. It looks kind of cool and get me around town. Right now I am looking at a few options for the car, the most promising of which is a new engine. I think I can pick up a used 1.6 for scrap value and rebuild/rework the engine. I am shooting for about 120-130 hp. About twice what it has now, so it should help move along if that pans out. Next on the list though is a MSD blaster coil to help quell some minor problems. I have only one rear goal with my car, though, and that is to beat my sister's boyfriend's turboed honda fit. Meaning I have to knock off about 7 seconds from my quarter time. Well enough rambling. For now.

I think the hood pins and cobra emblem make it. I forgot how little HP compact cars back in those days. My Dad's 86 Accord made like 93 hp, my 77 Honda Accord Hatchback was like 80 hp.

If you get another to rebuild, try to get low compression pistons. That way you can get a turbo from a 2.3 ford. Maybe look into seeing if a 2.3 will fit in your car and grab both engine, turbo, injection, and computer. It will make your car a little rocket and flat waste that kid's Honda Fit.

        I love this car!

You need to paint the wheels black and put either some chrome lugnuts or some centercaps on it though. I'd also put some spacers on the back wheels to fill up the wheel well even if just a tiny bit.

As far as cheap power goes, you might be able to mill the head a few thou and slap on a pace setter 70-1079 which should be a 1.6 escort header (the pace setter website seems to be down) and fab an exhaust.

I'm jealous, it reminds me of my old XR4ti (man I miss that rolling science experiment).

Cool ride, like the idea of a import fighter escort, wonder if latter escort or other ford products have wheels that will fit.

I had an '83 that I drove the wheels off while I was in college, great mileage and fun hand brake turns!

Check your front sub frame/ suspension attach points. Mine were popped apart at the spot welds on the pass side. Made for scary lunge left action over bumps and RR tracks! The right front wheel would move forward in the wheel well when the suspension unloaded, on compression the car would turn left!!!!! I pilled all the sheet metal back into shape and welded it up, with a couple of straps of steel in the high stress areas. After an alignment it never gave me any more problems.

            Good luck and have fun!!!

How about the later 1.9, and 2.0 split port engines?
They are of the same design, and mounting seems to be the same,
as does the trans bolt pattern.

Displacement is cheap, and easy torque.
I can't vouch for adaptability of the fuel system.

Dieselgeek could likely hook you up with that.

Said fit sports about 165 hp at the crank, so I have my work cut out for me, especially considering that I can only afford basic N/A parts, forced induction is currently out of my budget. EFI would be nice, but I have no idea how I would set that up. I am thinking maybe a Weber 32/36 might be affordable. 4 lug fox body wheels have the right lug pattern. That and I think that the focus may have the correct wheel size for my car, since it is a ford car, not a rebadged mazda. If I could get a hold of a 2.0 SPI engine on the cheap and adapt MS, I would be very happy.

The EFI and turbo thing may not be as bad as you think, Mega Squirt controler looks very afordable and Scott Clark on here (deisel geek) knows a ton about it may be able to give you tips. If there is a EFI intake for that motor already and some room to put a turbo on I would think there would be some sort of junk yard turbo that would fit. Look at stuff like V10 Mercury's rides lots of factory parts used in smart ways.

                      Good thing it isn't green!

MEDFORD, Ore. - An arsonist is apparently on the prowl for green Ford Escorts from the 1990s. Three of them have been burned in recent weeks, a series of acts that Medford police Sgt. Mike Budreau described as "pretty bizarre."

A 1995 green Ford Escort was destroyed by flames early Sunday morning after someone broke a window and poured flammable liquid into it. A similar fire was set in a 1993 green Ford Escort parked in a driveway on Feb. 22.

Investigators have also uncovered a Feb. 2 case of a 1992 green Ford Escort damaged by a plastic container filled with flammable liquid placed next to a tire that burned without setting the car afire.

Budreau told the Mail Tribune newspaper in Medford, "I think this person really doesn't like Ford Escorts."

Re: The First Love. My 'Scort

Just a bit more info to keep from feeling guilty. Car looks great in pics. Not so much in person. I do not have the grille installed, just haven't got around to doing anything with it. Paint is cheap. Rust is already showing through, should clean up when summer comes, as well as some touch ups and maybe some airbrushing. If I keep the car long term I will redo the paint job right with real automotive paint and primer, as well as paying a bodyshop to do the resto work unless I get help from someone who knows what they are doing. Beating the fit is a short term goal, I only need to do it once or twice, just to humiliate the guy. I hope sis breaks up with him soon. Will save me cash. I have had aspirations to do a RWD conversion and I think I will try someday, if just to do it. But for now, I want the car in all of its FWD Ebrake drifting glory.;D

I talked with dad tonight about performance potential, and he thinks that if I can find someone to help set things up a 2.0 spi and megasquirt is the way to go. Wheels will come soon, but not until I have got some miles on the new tires it has. Lost my hoodpin backers (don't ask), so I am currently fabbing up new ones out of diamond plate to replace them. GOnna look sweet.

                            first cars are bitchin!!

lets see if i remember this correctly from my own 93 escort wagon that i was going to turbo.

the escort exp had a factory turbo option. i would source a 1.9/2.0 and then find that 1.6 exp turbo exhaust manifold. get the turbo off an eclipse/talon an intercooler from a volvo 240. i think(its been 3 yrs since i planned this out) we were going to use stock 5.0 injectors?? hmmmm that one i am not so sure of... get to be great friends with Scott(deiselgeek) and do the ms. then get a spec clutch and proceed to break transmissions and or half shafts....

i would get some 15" focus wheels, or 14" tempo 7 spokes.

Those Chrysler 2.2L turbos were BITCHIN'. A buddy had a Dodge Spirit R/T that would keep
up with 3rd/4th Gen F-Bodies. Fun little car. It might be a stretch, but a 1.8l from a newer
Escort with either a 2.3's turbo or a SuperCoupe's blower could work. All you need is a T3
flanged hairdryer(35mm or so) and a decent tune. You could keep with a carb'd blow thru
setup or do MegaSquirt with EFI. Possibilities are endless. Don't be hard on yourself for the
paint being a bit shady or the grille not being attached. We all had 1st cars, most of them
were POS junkers, and that's how life goes. Yours is cool, clean and DIFFERENT. Good job!
