Neat idea on the chain. The rust here on something like that is dry, like a protective coating, it's not a nuisance to handle a rusty chain.
The wood does rot, if you really neglect it...there are some places at the ends of the boards where dirt collected and trapped moisture, and they're rotted, but mostly if you leave a piece of wood outside, it will slowly dry out over the years, it won't rot.
