"When you take America's garbage and fuse it with Japan's garbage, something special happens." -Emperor Shichi-ichi-nichi-roku

I had a 1988 Ford Ranger through High School and College which I had turboed (2.3l, 5speed) and rebuilt a number of times. When I moved to Los Angeles, this truck became contraband due to opressive smog laws. So I pulled the engine and put it in a 1962 Falcon, but that's another story. The Ranger shell sat in my back yard for a year or two until I convinced a friend to buy it from me (for $1) and let me swap a JDM RB20DET (2 liter I6 turbo) into it. He would pay all the parts and supplies costs, and I'd swap it. Target cost was $2500, since an RB20 with 60K miles on it is basically just garbage to the Japanese, I got the complete powertrain with ECU, Trans, accessories, etc for $1700. In theory it was an awesome idea, in practice it got me in a lot of trouble since I needed to complete the swap before I got married, which was 3 months after I started the swap. Anyway, now you know the background, here's the pics.

If you want to read more, I have detailed writeups on my blog: http://ironhydroxide.blogspot.com/

I guess I made the mount too short...

Very cool project. I kinda have a soft spot for Gen1 Rangers. That heater box notch seems to indicate the truck had a v8 at some point.

        Sounds interesting...
So the 6 can be CA legal, or going strictly offroad?

BBR, it never had a V8, just the 2.3 turbo. With the stock manifold it needed a notch in the heater box to clear the turbo and downpipe. That 545 looks gnarly!

Deaf Bob, it is not CA legal, but my buddy lives in Utah and will be moving to Arkansas soon, so it shouldn't be an issue for him.

Rag joint was too close to the turbo for comfort. Modified a ZJ shaft to fit the Ranger because it's smaller and has no rubber joint.

Had the injectors cleaned and flowed at RC Engineering because they were frozen shut with fuel residue.

Also had to repalce the FPR because it was frozen shut as well.

Had to make a notch in the crossmember so that oil changes don't require an engine hoist...

This has been finished for a few months now, but I figured I should close out the thread.
