He started efidynotuning when eectuning was down for an extended period and it was not known if it would come back.

Well, it's home. Judd and I left at 5:15am and drove to Ft Worth, some 350 miles away, finished the purchase, loaded it up, drove 350 miles and arrived home at 5:15pm.

The lot was owned by an older gentleman by the name of Butch. Real nice guy. I'm sure we could have talked cars for hours. Bore a striking resemblance to Jeremy Clarkson but with a Texan accent. lol. The lot has been there for 47 years and he is finally closing down and retiring. The office was straight out of the 70's. It even smelled vintage in there. I kinda wish my office had that vibe. Nothing fancy, just functional and very well kept.

    Ok on to the car:

Impression. It's an $800 car. Looks about like I imagined. Interior is decent. Needs cleaning but It's in waaaaay better shape than the 83 or the truck when I bought them. There are just a few mouse pills. NOTHING like the truck or the 83 though. Bleeech. The 4.6 is toast. It has a big ole crack in the block behind the waterpump where it froze. In all honesty, a guy could probably clean it and fix it with JBWeld and never think about it again. Not gonna do it though. Haha. Odometer shows 228k. Believable for sure. Engine is bone stock and it still has the factory Ford mufflers on it. Engine bay is cleanish, radiator looks new and the trunk is awful. Why do the trunks of cheap cars always look.like someone was murdered in them?

Carfax shows 1 owner thru 2016. I bet it has been on that lot since then.

Oh and the axle code is BH, so it is supposed to have 2.73's. Boo.

Overall, I am very happy with it and can't wait to dive in!

    Some pics.

That makes for a long day, glad y'all are home safe. Today would have been a miserable drive in the soup..

Curiosity got the better of me, and I retract my statement that "it can't be that hard" to control 4 solenoids. I was thinking How could I be helpful, add to the cause, that sort of thing and so I wound up looking through one of the disassembly docs here:

I always had a lot of respect for the debug guys at work. I tried it a few times many moons ago, and got a few headaches even *with* source code access. Disassembly and documenting it without the source is a monumental effort. I started having flashbacks reading this. I may send the guy some beer money just for the reminder.

I'm guessing that you may have to change the ECM anyway for an automatic trans, do you have any shareable thoughts on the '96-97 ish F250/F350 MAF computers?

/edit - body bolts look like no paint disruption? What a great starting platform! It's really straight looking from the pictures. Sorry to see there's only one louver and 3 wheels that match (unless the fourth is in the trunk / backseat though. haha. At least you get a huge head start with some of the electronics!

I really don't know anything about the MAF 460 ecms other than they exist. There is so much conflcting info about them it's ridiculous. EEC-IV? EEC-V? Sequential? Not?

It only has 3 wheels but I probably won't use them anyway. The louvers were the first thing I removed. haha.

The plan for now is to use this ecm and a C6. 3 speeds are fine with me.

I had a few minutes so I went outside and vacuumed the mouse turds and cleaned the plastics. The trunk was kinda gross.

I need a battery so I can move the power seat. I can barely get in it.

Tires are old, 2007 date codes.

I pulled the intake off the efi 460 today. Eeeeewwwww. Looks about like the 83GT's 302 looked when we took it apart. Haha.

I think I have about convinced myself to use the efi heads for no other reason than that sweet exhaust port they have. I intend to do zero porting and think they have better potential than the D3's stock for stock.

I overlayed the efi intake gasket on a D3 head and it *will* seal, but not by much. Minimum overlap is about 1/8" at the bottom of the port. It would probably work, but that sure does not seem like a lot of sealing width and there is a significant mismatch at the top of the port.

The Mustang elbow is pretty low, that may fit under the hood and would be pretty stealth.

My Orphan Annie decoder says the F3TE flows enough on the stock intake port to support 500 HP "max effort" stock, whatever the hell that means. I won't be able to keep myself out of the first inch or so of the lower EFI for the port match, though. Aluminum is so much easier. I am not sure I would see much benefit for my junk to do much more than a bowl cleanup in the heads, and then, it's a big fat "Huh. High swirl you say. Is this supposed to be here?"

I am entertaining the idea of filling the header flanges on cheap carb headers to cover the exhaust ports. I don't know what it does to scavenging, but I'm pretty sure it could be called "anti-reversion" ... haha. At the power level I'm looking at, does it really matter that much what it does to scavenging? I've almost talked myself into using the manifolds. I am curious to see how the Hookers fit in there and whether you will have room to maybe water-jet an adapter or something in place.

Hope you don't mind me comparing this in some ways to what I'm doing. They don't seem to be that different an approach and I have a pile of questions like normal. haha. What do you think about milling the heads down?

Ah, something else I think you may have already seen, but if not:

There's a couple of pictures of crank wheel and in place mounting for hall sensor on the timing cover I've been meaning to ask him about. It wouldn't be hard to do, but if there's factory junk that already works it may be worth checking on?

We are on similar paths. By all means compare away. Two brains are better than one when frankensteining stuff. Haha.

The crank trigger being only 4 pulses seems odd. Not 100% sure what it is used for in the 460 application. Sequential MAF 5.0L computers EEC-IV just use the TFI for cylinder identification. I might have read it was for cylinder misfire ID.

I may try an adapter flange of sorts. I have access to AutoCAD (use it every day) and I have a good friend with a CNC plasma table.

I noticed that engine you linked has aluminum ones. They probably cost far more than I would want to pay.

EDIT: those are BBF to BBC adapters but are only being used to adapt a standard header to an EFI head. They are $350. Nope. Nope. Nope

another sweet project for one of my favorite Texans! I literally have a pile of 8.8 rear axles, most are out of crown vics, and I will be cleaning house soon as I slowly move shops, if you want a set of OE gears, yours for the price of shipping - I think at least one of them has a 3.37??? I may also have a set of new 3.73 in the box and a track-lock rebuild kit
There's always something new to learn.

Beagle, for the crank sensor, since the ecu I will be using is looking for a 36-1 wheel, I plan on doing it just like I did the truck's crank sensor except I will use the Ford sensor instead of the Cherry sensor.

For the cam position signal, I think I will use a Duraspark distributor with all the reluctor vanes removed except for #1.

Now that I think about it, that 4 vane pickup on the crank of the MAF 460 is probably being used as a cam position signal.

Won't take much of an "adapter" flange to seal these up. This is a non-CJ gasket. A CJ port (like my Hooker headers) is a bigger mismatch a the top of the port. A CJ port is taller, but the bottom of the port is in roughly the same place as a Non-CJ.

I had the same thoughts when I first saw the EFI heads, they really don't look much bigger than a small block. On the pre-efi heads, they're huge bell bottom oval looking things compared to the actual port runner. The small exit ports flow about half again as much though!

Maybe you can talk BBR into taking a picture of the CJ port exit size on the Hooker headers he's got. They are scary huge compared to the EFI port...
