I had to put 2 on my F250 in Denison where the closest choice was Walmart. Ugh. LT235/85-16 E rated were 125.00 each for Dextero. It's a highway tire, but I was strapped for cash so on they went. Singapore specials, ride quiet, smooth.. uh, for an F250.

Does anybody have a clue why Ford changed the bolt pattern on the 8 lug from 8x6.5 that was pretty common forever? The 97 was the last year I think they used it, I wasn't born yet when they started using it.

IDK why Ford thought it was a good idea to change something that did not need to be changed.

It's a whopping 9 degrees outside right now. Sounds like a good day to go to the wrecking yard and see what they have. Supposed to be 40 tomorrow.

I snapped a few more pics yesterday before my hands and ears froze.

Gigantic two piston brake calipers. I was really taken back when I looked under there and they were so huge.

It has the optional dual front shock setup.

Dana 60. The tag is still on the diff and it says it's a 3.54 ratio. I was SUPER happy to find that it was not 3.73 or 4.10's.

The bottom of the truck looks really clean. There is surface rust on the floor pan, but I did not see any rust through anywhere. The bottom of the motor and trans have the typical dry crust associated with something 40 years old. Body mount rubbers and radius arm bushings all look pretty decent. I did not notice it before, but it has a front sway bar tucked up in there too.

I'm liking this thing more and more every time I look at it.

I'd comment about crusty forty year old but I'm getting entirely too close to fifty to remember what I was gonna say.

I'm digging the lack of wrench marks!

Sure those aren't 4 piston calipers? They look a lot like my Thunderbird's.

          Escaped on a technicality.

Looks like from the pics that it has new pads too... Also, is that a dual shock setup I see?
What size tire is that? I'm not up on my 16.5 stuff. 7.50-16.5? About 30" tall?
With that size tire or slightly taller 31's, that 3.50 gear will work great! Although if your plan is to just drive it local, deeper gears could have been fun!

The more pictures you show...the straighter this thing looks, just neglected! Dying to see this puppy cleaned up, trim straightened and grill replaced! Come ON warmer weather!

I think about any E rated will be about 32" Andy. The good thing about a 8x6.5 pattern is plain rims are about 10 bucks a piece.

I love this truck, I have a very soft spot for old ford trucks, spent a lot of time in them in college - one of my favorites of all time.
I would go with southern air over vintage, way cheaper (like rebelwire compared to painless cheaper) than vintage.

I really look forward to seeing what you do with this thing, just a performance timing set to undo the retard would be a big improvement.

The tires are 9.50 - 16.5's and yes it has the quad shock front end.

I can't wait for warmer weather either! I went out to the local wrecking yard today and it was 12 degrees and snowing. Brrrr. I looked at a bunch of pickups, but man they were really picked over. Took note of a few parts to come back and get later when it's warmer.

As if I was not cold enough, I came home and started fiddling around with it. The wipers work, the blinkers work, the running lights work, but no headlights.

After seeing the trucks at the wrecking yard, I was happy to see the cab is not rusted out at the floor below the rear window. I cleaned some of the trash out of the cab and gave the engine a really good looking over. Still trying to figure out how to clean all the sticks and leaves out of the cowl area....

                      You're making progress, eh?

I went for a drive to Bisbee today....after installing the second used shaft-type stereo that didn't work. I put some computer speakers behind the seat, they work.

Does your truck have two tanks? they had one on the side and one at the back, I recall

Yes it has 2. I think it'll hold somewhere around 40 gallons. Should be good for 350 miles. Haha

The sender or wire or switch for the right tank in mine is flaky, so I just used the left tank. I filled it up yesterday, gauge said almost empty, it's supposed to hold 20 gals, it took 15 to fill it. I had to drive 75 miles to get the gauge back down to the full mark. I guess there's only about 10 gallons of resolution on the gauge from E to F, which explains why it seems to go down so fast. I'm guessing the truck might get 15 mpg. It sure won't pull a hill at 40 in high gear!

It was a happy day for me when I looked at the antique Gateway 2000 speakers I smuggled out of the trash from work and saw a 12v negative ground power input. They threw away so much stuff it made me cry. That's my "mobile" sound system now, I'd say a legitimate 5w / channel. The power supply with them said "Altec Lansing" so I guess that is where Gateway sourced from.

James, the guy across the street from me when I was a teen did floors for Wolf Nursery, Sears, and Eckerds drug stores. He had a topper on a LWB F150 with a 460 and probably 800-1000 pounds worth of buffers, ammonia, and wax in the back of it. Mostly city driving would get about 8-10 mpg out of it, but he drove like a bat out of hell. OD would have upped it a bit on the highway, I'm sure.

Gas mileage is not a real big concern for this thing. The Durango is not exactly spectacular in that department and my commute is only about 3 miles one way on city streets.

It's supposed to gent in the 40's today, so I might get to do work on it a little more. Main project for the day however is replacing the thermostat in the Durango. It takes f o r e v e r to warm up even with the radiator completely blocked with cardboard! It's a pain in the butt, but needs to be done.

James - buy a GOOD thermostat! I went round and round in a daily driver a few years ago with t-stats - I think I replaced that one three times before insisting on a robert shaw and then confirming in a pot on the stove that it opened fully at the rated temperature.... from now on I think I'll confirm every one I install. Take care of those cold fingers!
