265's should be good with that gear. OD would be nice though, maybe a little chatty (thirsty) on the highway? 2600 at 70.

my 57 does ok with 3.73s and 235/85 R 16 tires. Although it is happier cruising at 70 than at 75.

The tires on it now are basically the same height as a 235/75-15. The Durango with a 3.55 gear turns 3k at 70. That's why I want a 32" tire. I want to get the highway rpm down just a little. 70 may be pushing it when towing. 65 may be the typical max speed.

OD would be nice, but not really a option for me, unless I were to swap to a GM trans...... (not likely)

The 32" tire and 3.54 at 70 and came up about 2600 according to Wallaceracing.com, about 2400 at 65... I'm keeping an eye on Randal and the MegaShift. I see E4od's every now and then for reasonable. I figure you wanna get some good gas in it and round tires and drive it, but damn if I can help myself and want to spend your money.

I'm probably an easy year out before a conversion. Likely to go with the turbo upgrade. That is unless my 200-4r rebuild turns out as not such a great rebuild =P

$425 for an E4OD controller. Interesting. I will need to remember that.

Besides 35's are too big for me. I may end up with a 32 (265/75-16) on it, but that's big enough for this truck and the 3.54 gears.
My old truck was a stock 360 small block with a 6" lift and 37's. With a 3:91 rear it would tow damn near anything I put behind it and ran down the road just fine. As for makng it "unpracticle"...my thought is *pffffft* I could haul stuff in the bed just fine...it could tow just fine...and it would off road like a mofo. If youre going full on 12" and bigger mud truck lifts...well yeah, thats just silly if you want to use it as a truck...but 3 to 6 inches will not affect your truckin' ability....

                  my 2 cents...

I remember that noise.. I had big mirrors on mine, they ratlled.

I like your story BBR, my first truck was a 1974 f100, with a 3 on the tree. Nice ride, I mean comfortable. Also in high school at the time, the dream of bigger engines always out loud.

I paid 150 dollars, falling apart. the f250 is a real number, real hauler, real tough.

The only thing I would mention for advice, rid the whole relay starter crap under the hood, mimick a modern vehicle of any kind. Even Texas must be encountering that weirdo fende rmounted in recent weather.

                    Nice rig for $500.

What's a good source for parts for these things? I know LMC, Jeff's Bronco Graveyard and National Parts Depot all have stuff.

Anyone else I should know of? The dash/interior are going need several things to be functional.

Man!!! Didn't take long to BANGSHIFT the hell out of this build!! Prerunners on 35's and overdrives...oh my!
I've love to watch it happen! But you better stick to the plan...or this won't be in the $5000 Budget Challenge for long!

With your minimal commute and this being just a fun/motorized wheelbarrow, overdrive is probably overkill.
Besides, our mildly warmed up 120,000 mile 460 ran 3000rpm FOR HOURS coming home from Tallahassee to upstate PA straight through. No issues other than a little oil consumption. And it sounded GREAT through dual 2.5" Magnaflows while doing it!

I'm just curious what interesting stuff you'll come across when you dig all the trash out of it!

Its interesting... Up here in the northeast, these trucks have a pretty big following. I know three guys local to me with BIG parts stashes. (one guy has three parts trucks behind his house)
That is usually the BEST way to buy parts. But just a quick look at the Amarillo CL....there doesn't seem to be too much dentside action around you. I'd start asking ALL of your car buddys to see if you can locate a dentside "collector". You might get lucky.

I hate to bring it up....but if you can buy it right AND not have your wife kill you....a parts truck might be the most economical way to get what you need. Strip the good stuff and scrap the rest. If you do it right, ($500 or less) you can get A LOT of good parts for a couple hundred bucks.
