Thankfully I do not have a lot of bends to buy and it seems the local place is competitive price-wise with the on-line retailers I looked at. It is just surprising how expensive they are.
I did not get a thing done this weekend. We made a quick (if you can call 506 miles one way, quick?) trip to San Antonio to watch the Girls 5A High School State championship basketball game. Jake is a varsity cheerleader, and we have several connections to the team and coach so we though it would be fun to go. This is the second year in a row they have played in the championship game. They won again this year in a nail-biter.
Spring break is coming up and the wife is headed to NYC with some friends, so I am hoping to get a lot done while she is gone.
Just for fun, my fav pic of Jake the cheerleader. "Nothing to see here, just holding a person over my head." Haha

I needed a turbo drain flange, but rather that try to order one and maybe get one that would not fit, I just decided to make one. 1 flat piece of steel, 2 small holes, 1 big hole tapped 1/2" NPT and one -8AN to 1/2" NPT brass fitting is all it took. The bolt holes in the turbo are *supposed* to be metric, but were actually 3/8" NC. Lol

Took advantage of some free time this evening to build 98% of the hot side piping. I'm beat. I must have crawled under that truck 500 times.
Exhaust come from driver's side under the bell housing to this junction. This blended pipe took me longer to make than most of the rest of it. Haha. I really planned the routing to allow me to remove the converter bolts and starter without havingnto drop the exhaust.
This is the pipe that the transition blends into. It snakes up between the frame rail and motor mount to the 90 degree bend up towards the turbo.
Turbo flange small dog leg and 90 degree bend. I know it is not bolted down, I just stuck it there for a pic.

This part is definitely a learning process. The next time I do something like this I will start with the hardest to access area and work my way toward the more easily accessed areas. I made the mistake of starting with the easy areas and that made the hard area really hard. Haha.
Last night , I did more work to the crossover pipe and have it mostly finished. I only had to bolt it on and unbolt it about a thousand times. Clears everything nicely and tucks up tight. I am very happy with the pipe routing and the ability to access everything under the engine easily.
I need to tweak the section that goes under the motor mount to the vertical 90° bend a little as it's angle changed slightly after getting the pass side manifold connected. No biggie though.
Currently deciding on wastegate placement/angle.
Option 1- horizontal placement: Come straight out of the vertical 90° and either vent exhaust straight down to atmosphere or up and over frame rail to down pipe.
Option 2 - angled upward placement: Angled up underneath smog pump/alternator bracket. Exhaust exits straight down to atmosphere, or over frame rail and down to atmosphere or over frame rail and back to down pipe.
The angled upward position might be easier to access for spring changes or whatever.Life is short. Be a do'er and not a shoulda done'er.

Hot side it mostly finished. I still need to tweak it a little in a couple of places. I decided to just run the wastegate straight out for exhaust priority and because it was easier to make.

After everything was welded and bolted up tight, the up-pipe turned out to be a tiny bit short. You could assemble it, but once it was together it was applying quite a bit of pressure on the rest of the system. So I chopped it and stretched it out so now it slips together without any pushing, pulling, banging, or other shenanigans.

Boo. The oil return fitting I put in the timing cover is going to be just a little too high. I thought the turbo was going to be mounted higher so it was a crap shoot anyway. I suppose I will just put one in the pan.

V-band came in, and I welded it in last night. The last joint to weld will be the open pipe (sticking up) into the expanded section below. This v-band should allow me to disassemble everything easily without too much trouble. I suppose I could have just clamped it at the expanded section, but it would have been all but impossible to pull apart should I ever need to.

Pic of how it goes together. Definitely looks like I built it. Not perfect but not stupid either.

In order to lessen the chances of a killing the camshaft, I will break it in using my Dominator and the trusty old HEI. I put them on just to make sure there were going to fit ok. Since it is temporary, I will just run it off the primary side.

I started painting the pipes today. Paint won out over wrap. I have used wrap before on stuff and it didn't seem to be very durable.
I also did some more wiring harness weeding. The current plan is to weed out the unnecessary things from the EFI main harness like headlights, marker lights, etc.
I considered using an eec to MS adapter in place of the stock eec, but I think I will just leave the eec alone and run a separate, simple harness for the MS. The stock computer really won't be doing a darn thing other than plugging a hole in the firewall. I really want to keep the efi engine's fuse/relay box because that will keep me from having to redo a bunch of the in-cab wiring we already did.Life is short. Be a do'er and not a shoulda done'er.
