  • is it possible to drill glass?

i would "assume" its more like grind it rather than drill it,
using a diamond bit/concrete bit or similar, and go super
slow with no pressure, and lots-o-lube...

i found a giant 2-1/16 glass diamond shaped paperweight i would love
to use as a shift knob on the 55 plymouth....didnt guys used
to use glass doorknobs & such back in the day?

the plan was IF i can grind a flat spot at the point then drill it,
to fit a 'tube nut' ( like for joining allthread rod together ) with
the corners knocked down into the hole with epoxy or jbweld,
so i can thread it onto the hurst stick....

a couple phone calls to jewelers here basically got me
nowhere, they thought i was giving a prank call. idiots.

Found this article, I hope that it helps:
Drilling Glass: I do a lot of glass work of all kinds.  Since I recently acquired a kiln, I have started branching out in some of the work that I do, and some of it has even worked out ok!  But I know from experience that drilling into glass isn't always …

yeah, it's grind... diamond bits will work. Water makes a fine lubricant.

They sell hole saws. Clamping it still should be entertaining along with the remaining chunk of glass left in the middle by the hole saw if it's a blind hole. Ebay "diamond saw glass"... I could see drilling it oversize and filling it with polyurethane and tapping that.

At a previous job, I once tried to get a CO2 laser to cut glass by scribing it and then turning up the power enough to get a thermal shock to snap it along the cut line. Couldn't get it to cut tiny radii or get the cut edge to be straight up and down.

Not the process I'd use to drill a blind hole, though.

well, apparently the wife IS smarter than me just like shes been saying all along.
she suggested an upside down lead crystal mini perfume bottle secured the same
way, epoxy/tube nut, since it already HAS a hole drilled into it...

a quick fleabay search revealed literally thousands of designs, and $15 later...........

i think this will look crazy as a shift knob, its almost a diamond shape when
you turn it upside down, and like all of yous guys i love making something
            outta nothing.

*edit*--she even suggested tossing colored glitter into the epoxy to
            'make it even more sparkly'........wow.
what kinda mushrooms did she have in that omelet this morning?!?!?!!
