  • Bench race THIS; TPI 283; biggest street/strip cam?

    Okay, so I'm itchin' to start some crap with this 283 I got from Bruab.

    I've got a TPI setup, and yes, it will require a custom chip, or MS conversion...

    BUT;

    What's the biggest cam that'll work?

    Assume 9.5:1 compression, 4.10 rear gear, Vortech heads, etc..

    Yes, the smaller cubic inch motor will make a given cam act bigger... And the 283 will let the TPI rev a little more than a TPI 350... What's the minimum vacuum the TPI will require?

    I have a comp 292H for a SBC....That would probably work great.

    244/244 @ .050 .501/.501 lift.....Should be pretty big for a 283....

      I think the Comp XE250H would be another good choice.

      206/212 @ .050 .432/.444 lift. Not quite as aggressive as farenschnell's choice, but still should make that 283 a screamer.

      Funny you mentioned the 283, as i was thinking of building one myself. My son wants an older Vette. I might get it, but if I do, I want something a little milder under the hood than a 350. My build plans for the 283 is as follows...

      Bore the block .030 over
      Install flat top pistons
      Use a set of 305 heads (port, polish, blend the bowls, 3 angle valve job)
      Comp 240H cam
      Edelbrock 600 CFM carb, or TBI.

      That should make it a fun daily driver, but not so much as to kill him. After a few years, I can always install a bigger engine if I feel he's ready for it.

      You might want to think of running 305 heads yourself.

        i have used an isky 501 with great resluts
        used a 350 hp 327 factory cam with a stick was great {mild street motor}
        and our race car motor has a .632 solid roller but it is poked AND STROKED TO 349CI ;D

              I like the GM second design off road cams, yeah theres more power from others but they sound great. I know its a solid ....... but...... if you run some hyd. on it at .15 lash they work great and you dont hve to lash them all the time

                  With the stock Vortech heads, you will be limited to something like .480 lift. Oh, and does the TPI setup bolt up correctly to the Vortechs with the bolt hole issues?
                  Sorry, not so much "which cam?" related, but more questions about this combo.

                    To put a TPI on Vortec heads you have to buy the $400 intake base from Scoggin-Dickey.

                      Or drill the Vortec heads for a 12 bolt intake.

                        no - you have to buy the intake - vortech heads are raised intake port and they don't line up -

                        world products makes a less shrouded 283 head

                          Correct.

                          PP has a cheaper one, right?
