I still suspect something vacuum. Even more now. I know I'm waay late on this but you seem like the type that would like a gear drive. A little extra noise plus it fits the theme of the car as a max effort small block.

Corrosion a problem where you live?
Here I have to clean battery terminals at least once a year.. Maybe wiggle the spark plug boots a few twists?

The battery is in an aluminum box in the rear where the spare tire used to live.
Plug terminals are on tight....tomorrow I'll look in the distributor that suffers corrosion.
We just had three days of rain....trunk filled with water.
First job when I get back home..new trunk seal, and luckily I have one...
