So, my buddy dailies a 78 Town Car with a 400. It seems that it only came with a 2 barrel, and he's trying to give it some more umph. Anybody have any recommendations for intake manifolds? I love the Air Gap on my 350, but seems that they don't make that for the 400. What would you recommend?

M is the only flavor of 400 that Ford made.
If I were him, I might start somewhere else....what rear gears does it have?

The 351M/400 are the red headed stepchild of Ford engines, and their release during the smog era didn't help.......
BUT, they are also vastly under rated, and there have been a few built for Engine Masters competitions that have done quite well.
All I can tell you is that in very late seventies to early eighties, I knew many people that had Ford pickups with these engines, and an Edelbrock Performer intake, a holley carb, an RV cam, and headers & dual exhaust made a world of difference to their performance & mileage.
351C deck is ~9.206", 351M/400 deck is 10.297", so you can run 351C intakes if you want to make spacers. There may even be someone making spacers, haven't looked into it.
And the Town Car, being an emissions era barge, will have been geared for CAFE ratings (or Bonneville, not performance, so yah, a bit stiffer axle ratio will help as well.

Tubbed covered it ...
For derby cars...simpler the better.. Practically every vac hose got plugged, etc.. Then a points distributer was installed
For the street... Check all vac hoses. Even under the dash. Simple carb refresh may help..
If it is a 9", gears be easy.. Those cars were 3:08 down to 2:70's areas. .. I believe they are not center section rears in those cars..

Just so we don't ruffle any purist Ford feathers.....
400M does not exist. It's just a 400. 351M does exist though.
I have a strange desire to put a 400 in a Fox body.

Here you is another article. I still like the old one better, but it shows off the new heads, and what a hot rod machinest can put together.

Hear I will, help you out. If you go that route you will loose the 5 speed. Also if you're going to putt a 400 in you might as well go back to a 460
On the other hand is never to early to start the bench build on the project after the turbo ranger.
