  • For those who do

If you happen to have a 67-72 Chevy truck and you have some door handles that are broke. Here is a simple way to make them like new again.

Buy a length of 1" square tubing at your local hardware store. Now cut 1.5" lengths out of it. Cut that in half. Drill hole in each one. Take and open the backside of the handle up just a bit for it to fit inside where the old metal piece was. Put the button and spring back inside it and drill four small holes for your rivets and put it together and your done you have new handles. I have done about 6 pairs of them.

Yes and the little tabs are always brittle after 40 years. I have never got a pair to not break when working on them. I have thrown away at least 5 sets before I figured out how to fix them. I'm working on this set of handles now for the 68.

So, what is the replacement, a piece of 3/16th plate and a few rivets?

Or is it, sheet metal bent into a short "U" , or if better description, a "c" channel. like this

1" aluminum tubing, cut in half with a hole drilled in the center.
Watch my video it explains it.

Corners are stronger with Andy's pieces versus forming out of sheet metal.. Gonna have to try this.

They work great and much stronger than stock. I have 3 trucks with them installed.

                  tough fix.. the pot metal.
I inadvertantly bought a 96 gmc with doors touching off 200 pounds on the scale.
I figured unusual by the retarded replies on the facebook groups.

I have welded b-pillar root and pin area to gain density.
it has worn down the door latch pin.. and it is solid steel.

The 60s sure did last longer.

you could find the heavy duty dump truck versions for the given generation.
I learned that about 88-98 as well.
