Had the turbo slant six build briefly on the road, but then when I dynoed it, the motor started making a rather ominous noise that I suspected was rod knock. So, I pulled the motor, and sure enough, it was rod knock.
Probably caused by a clogged pick-up rather than detonation.
Looks like a good machine shop and a new rod could have fixed that damage, but I also found a bunch of hairline cracks in the block - probably freeze damage. Also probably from over 20 years ago, but the car hasn't been on the road for most of those years and I'm not sure how long these would have taken with real heat cycles on them to develop into a serious coolant leak. Worse, there may be some into the lifter valley that I can't see.
I did have a camera going for some of the dyno pulls. If anyone wants videos, I'll see if I can edit them into something small enough to post.
At this point, I think I'm going to be hunting for another core to rebuild.
