  • Crankshaft tolerences

I can't find numbers for what my journal diameters should be. Does anyone know what the measurement would be for a 1990 Ford 1.9 out of an Escort lx?

    You mean bearing clearances?
If so, 0.001" per inch of journal diameter.

This rule of thumb works for every engine installed in weed whackers to container ships.

No, I mean the journal diameter so I know what bearings to order.

I will get it turned if it needs it, but I need to know the specs before I know if I needs it. If all of the journals are good and within the tolerance, I am just going to replace the bearings.

You need to get a good shop manual for your car. Also it wouldn't hurt to get one for the engine you're building. Original Ford manuals are best, do some research to see if there are more than one volume...so you know you're getting the info on the engine. ebay is a good place to get them for old cars like yours that are not real popular.

For stuff like this, you could see if you can find a big Chiltons manual, look at used bookstores you might get one cheap. I have a bunch of them.

This book in my hands says 2.2827-2.2835 for the mains, 1.7279-1.7287 for the rods

My crank is just within tolerances and appears fine, so I am going to reuse it. I can't afford to do things that are not neccesary. I will have the engine apart again when I put in domed pistons anyway and a 5 speed. I just need a good engine to get me through school this year. I may also be getting another Escort for free, if I can convince Dad.

at least polish the crank with a little emery cloth

Most machine shops will polish a crank for cheap - like $25 or even less. Worth doing.

Don't let them scare you, it should be fine with new bearings, as long as it's not scored noticeably.

comebacks with those RECON cranks - everybody laughs when the engine you just rebuilt comes in the door knocking away
