    Question for the group:

I need a starter for my 1966 283 V8 and was wondering the compatibility of other small block starters. I am assuming it has a 113 tooth flat ring gear so will almost any 350/4.3 starter bolt up?

You should have no problem finding a starter for a '66 283.

This website below has lots of cross-reference info. --- HTH

      Re: GM smallblock starters

I recently installed a gear reduction starter out of a 90 S-10 4X4 with the 4.3 L V-6 into my friend's Camaro (SBC 350). Worked like a champ! Did a real good job of clearing his headers too. If you order one from a parts store, ensure you get the "small body" starter. The "large body" starter is a direct drive unit.

Another option is the Corvette LT4 starter but I lost the part number for it.

Dave is right. The S-10 starter is for a 168 tooth flywheel.

And if memory serves, GM used the LT1 from 1993 to 1997. I know the Corvette was the first to get the LT1 (1992, I think) and I know the Camaroes?Firebirds had the LT1 until 1997. The LT1 came in the Camaro/Firebird, Corvette, Caprice/Impala Sedan and Wagon, Buick Roadmaster Sedan and Wagon, and I think it even came in the Caddy Fleetwood. I thought I'd throw this info out there in case you wanted to dig through the junkyards for one if you have a 153 tooth flywheel.

                    LT1/LT4/L99 applications:
                    92-96 Y-body (Corvette, LT4 96 only)
                    93-97 F-body (Firebird/Camaro, SLP Firehawks and SS's might have had LT4's)
94-96 B/D-Body (L99 base motor in Caprice, LT1 standard in Impala SS, Roadmaster, Fleetwood Brougham)

                      That's a pretty popular application.

                      Should be easy to find.
