  • Anodizing removal

I was thinking of trying to remove the blue anodizing from some of the Earl fittings on my engine. If I can get it off, I was thinking of buffing the fittings. I have stainless hard lines so I really don't feel like buying new fittings and making new lines.
Seems like I remember reading somewhere that EZ Off oven cleaner will do it.
    Any ideas?

ez off is lye, and yes, lye is what is used in the anodizing process.

just make sure to rinse well easyoff or LYE is highly basic and will eat away your aluminum.
I work with large quantities of potassium hydroxide AKA LYE and best way to neutralize is with vinegar. the a water bath.

A wire wheel on a bench grinder works well.

What about soaking in brake fluid? Not sure about an anodized surface, but brake fluid works well on paint.

            Caustic soda.
It removes anodizing very well, but it eats aluminum so, be careful
Desolve a small amount of soda in water and then soak for a few minutes and rinse well.

            Wear rubber gloves too.

I also use it to remove paint off steel parts. They can soak for days if required and come out looking like new.

PS, don't buff them. That will ruin your parts.

We used hot caustic soda much like a hot tank to get it off of aircraft parts. I know they carefully timed the parts in the bath though so it wouldn't add to the damage we were already looking for.
