  • Been thinking about swapping cams

Since this thing is coming apart, I am thinking about swapping in a hydraulic cam...

Yes, I said a hydraulic cam.

    A few reasons why:

    1. I hate pulling the valve covers off on this thing.

    2. This solid roller is very noisy.

    3. This cam seems like it wants more gear and converter than I am willing to run right now.

    4. I hate pulling the valve covers off on this thing.

    5. In Engine Analyzer Pro, the Lunati 61605 cam makes more torque where I want it and does not give up much on the top end at all

    6. You don't have to jack with lash on a hydraulic cam.

    7. I am limited to around 6000 rpm anyway because I am running a cast crank

    8. I hate pulling the valve covers off on this thing.

    9. I think my valve springs are on the border of being too soft for this roller cam's lobez.

    10. And the best reason of all..... I'm lazy and don't want to have to fiddle with lash or even worry about it.

    Graphy from Engine Analyzer Pro:

Hyd roller = $$$$$ that could be put towards fixing the dang thing. FT hyd's are cheeeep. Plus hyd rollers are rumored, by some notable builders on 460ford.com, to not work well in BBF's due to the valve train arrangement.

          I got to ask..
why are you worry'n about getting more low end in a truck that a 390-460 is going to just blow the tire off at will..
and if you're looking for $$$$$$$$ to put towards fix'n it..
wouldn't that cam in it. = more money towards fixing it?

Similar to a BBC, and those work fine.

Re: Been thinking about swapping cams

I can sell the roller lifters and cam and make more than enough to switch over to a FT hyd.

min I don't know. They cite valvetrain instability and harmonic issues. These guys regularly have motors in the EMC, so I think they kinda know what they are doing. I will just take their word for it.

I am just looking to make power in the 3000-6000 range. I may just leave it alone. I just haven't decided yet, but the thought of setting and forgetting is very appealing right now since the whole idea behind building a big inch motor was so that it would be reliable.... :

They seem to say the same thing about BBC's too.
I'm just worried of cam wipeout...

I would stick with roller. Just think about the idea of adding one more possible catastophic failure to the list with the FT stuff. Any word on what engine you are going to screw together? 460? Another stoker?
