  • K&N Air Filters........

Not sure how I found this information but I've
been reading some info on the internet (if it's on the
internet it's got to be true...right?)
about K&N air filters and how the oil they use on
them ends up coating the carb and getting into the motor.

    Bad?

I only know enough how them (K&N) to be dangerous.......so what's the
    scoop?

the amount od oil that would get in the engine is no more than gets past the rings and valve seals

Really only happens if you over oil them after cleaning, I've used them for three years on the Pumpkin without issue.

I use one on the Escort, but I am pretty sure most of it's problems weren't cause by the K+N. It did make a definite difference in drivability.

I know on my brothers duramax, if you over oil the filter, the mass airflow sensor gets coated with oil and throws the check engine light.....

mass airflow poisoning , and no we would not warranty a p0101 if you had a K and N filter on the truck

Yep, over oiling is definetely a problem. We have seen quite a few mass air flow codes caused by this. People need to get over the theory that if a little is good, then more must be better.

The other complaint I've heard about K&Ns is that they supposedly don't filter out quite as much crud as paper. I've tried to track down a good study on that, but so far I haven't found good numbers to back it up.

From my perspective the point is 1) reuseable, and 2) 3-5% mpg gain in fuel economy. (and yes, I have actually verified that).

I just pull the MAFS and clean it and reset the code till he cleans and oils it again.....

No they do not filter as much as paper, hence the reason why the flow more air.

While my car was on the chassis dyno at Westech the guys tested my K&N filter on and off the car. Made no difference in horsepower. So that means I'm not losing hp using the air cleaner.

From what I've read on the diesel truck forums - they are taboo on turbo diesel trucks - a few have actually come apart and gotten sucked into the turbo :o

I'm a big fan of them on NA vehicles - one of mine has been on Seth's 'bu for all the miles he's put on it - and like my ford plug wires - are one of the things that haven't broken! ;D

I like the re-usable idea - especially on a newer car with the cartridge style filters that cost half as much as a K&N - so, once you run the K&N for a while - it's paid for itself.

I've never had the MAF spoiling problem - I guess that means I'm using too little oil ;D
There's always something new to learn.

no power in an air filter
still none on pro stockers !!!!

I do like that unifilter for under a scoop though
