  • 496 vs 555

    Still on the bench.
In 06 I had to toss the 454 0.30 over in the scrap pile > from the abuse of drag week.

I want to put a new engine together to compete in the 08 drag week.

    496 or 555
The 496 makes great toque and with a good set of heads can make around 730 hp on a 10.5 comp.

The 555 or 565 also makes great hp and a larger price tag.
I had talked to a few people said they did not gain much (.2 to .3) at all when the went to the 555.

Need some input from the guys that went from a 496 to a 555.
    Thanks for any input

What you'd gain would be being able to

achieve your prior bests more readily

with less strain, thus w/more durability.

Durability is usually cheaper in the long run.

Extra cubes allow less radical combos.

A small motor can still use std 24* heads. A smaller motor can
be easier on a small tire set-up. (less tq)

But a big motor with an MSD digi box can do wonders to tame a wild motor.
509 or 540 will allow a couple of extra passes out of the block.

        Re: 496 vs 555

        here's how I see it:

        555 - 496 = 59 ci

        730 / 496 = 1.471 hp/ci

        so 1.471 * 555 = 816 hp

        816 -730 = 86 hp
        verify:
        59 * 1.471 = 86 hp
