  • Time to cam a Buick

I'm looking for a new cam for a friends Buick 455. It's in a 70 GS. There was a little head work done. Should be 9.5-10 to 1 compression. It had maybe 8.5. He liked the cam that was in it, but it seemed to need more vacuum.

    Here are the specs:
    .490/.487 lift
    282/303 advertised
    233/248 at .050
    109/117 lobe centerline
    113 lobe seperation

My thought was a little less duration and a little more lift.

    What do you all think.

282/303 dur @ .050? Are you sure those aren't advertised duration? That's the kind of numbers of duration for a cam with like .700 lift.

Would call (at least) 2 cam companies,

feed them all the specs/info they need

and listen to their tech advisors before

      making a choice.

Crane, Lunati, & Comp are favorites,

but you'd probably want to add a call

      to www.TAPerformance.com for their

input on the BB Buick. ---

The cam he had sounds about perfect IMO. Not sure how extensive the Buick heads are ported, but it looks to me like the 455 stock heads flow similar to the old SBC Camel humps only weaker on the exhaust side. Unless there is a lot of port work done then it won't pay to try to rev the big Buick very high. IMO

The compression increase should help it idle and increase low end TQ so maybe the "need more vacuum" issue will disappear just from the compression increase.

              Thanks.

He thought he needed more vacuum at idle to help his power brakes. The car ran pretty good.

Very little porting, as far as I can tell.
